This movie does several things pretty well. First, Drew Barrymore's character is really well drawn. She's sensitive, consumed by her own emotions, and, well, horny. Unlike the teenagers in so much of today's cinema, Drew's character has a total lack of attitude, she's fueled by feelings, not cliches. This is all done in a subtle way, and that makes her very likable and sympathetic. Also, the "far from home" atmosphere is created nicely. You really do feel as if you're in the last place on earth, with all these oddball characters either trying to get out or else slowly losing their sanity from the isolation and desolation. These things contrast well and give the film a really uneasy feeling. The totally naive girls put in a dangerous place - but of course she doesn't know it's dangerous. It could so easily descend into melodrama, but it doesn't because of the skillfulness with which it is crafted. The other characters are also well done - everyone has a very definite personality and they all add together to create the atmosphere - exactly what you might expect to find in such a place, but of course you've never thought about it before because who would want to?
Overall, an effective film.

Far From Home is by far one of my favorite movies with such classic lines as 'Did I scare you?' and 'Where are you going? We were playing keep-away!' The reason many people didn't like it,though, was because of the uncomfortable desert setting. But the story is full of subtle details that will require multiple viewings to catch.Sure the movie has one or two script flaws(beware the 'Have you ever...done it' scene and try to ignore some of Drew's narrations)and a poorly-placed sex scene (I'd rather see Drew swimming anyday) but, thanks to a great story and a superb cast,I think this is one of the best movies noone has ever heard of.

Not only does Drew look fantastic and melts the camera lens with her young teenage beauty, (never looked better in a bikini) the movie (suspense-mystery) keeps the viewer engaged and guessing throughout. As a professional videographer myself, I must say I felt the cinematography is very well done as well. I saw this movie nearly 25 years ago and glad I purchased it from Amazon for my collection.

I just wanted to mention that this film can be zoomed by most widescreen TVs, without that "missing heads" look of a pan and scan. I think they call this "open matte" filming, where the film is originally shot in full frame (ready for old TVs), but intentionally made so that the movie can have the top and bottom cut for theaters, thus no pan and scan. With a dvd player that upconverts to high def, this movie looks great!

A very good movie, wrongly crucisfied by the critics. I was on the edge of my seat watching this film, and you could never tell what was going to happen. Drew Barrymore proved in this film she was going to be the great actress she turned out to be.

I almost think Far From Home isn't very dated for a movie from 1989. After all it takes place out in some small town in the desert and it's about a maniac who secretly sneaks around and kills people. Nothing can be dated about that because desert settings can never change! However...

Then you have a character like Susan Tyrrell, who plays a single mother with all kinds of family dysfunctions such as the young daughter disliking the kind of fish sticks her mother serves so the little girl throws a hissy fit resulting in the mother handing her the food she wants while sitting the daughter on a couch in front of the TV (a spoiled kid obviously). Funny moment before this when she screams "DINNER'S READY!" right in her daughter's ear. What a... nevermind. Won't say it man!

I guess the older brother (Andras Jones) is an angry loner who turns out to be even angrier than we ever could have guessed (and even gets smacked across the face by his mom resulting in the boy leaving). Probably shouldn't take a bath though Susan! So yeah, about what I say about this movie not appearing dated... Susan's behavior is clearly a dated exaggerated trademark of the 80's. She's just weird man!

Then there's Drew Barrymore. Oh boy! Is it okay to find her attractive? After all she's only 14 but is portrayed to look 18. Back in the day it wasn't uncommon to show underage girls portraying a more mature woman in both appearance and attitude, but I think Far From Home takes such a portrayal to an unnecessary level. This movie does everything in its power to make Drew look as hot as possible. Mixed feelings with that.

Wow, this was an edge of your seat guessing game. I was so interested with the plot and was suprised all the way through. It is a nail biter. Drew Barrymore is the perfect example of teenagers today and Andras Jones was wonderful as the chilling "Jimmy" a beaten obsessed "manaic". Andras gave me goose bumps all the way through. Anthony Rapp was also very good in a supporting role. This is an all together great film, and i recommed it with the highest it can recieve 5 stars.
