These are the best images ever, near as I can tell.
HOWEVER:
- I would deduct a star (but won't because the images are A+) for the ridiculously tiny text that appears every 20 pages or so. Why not just make the book 10 pages longer and make the text font READABLE? I almost need a magnifying glass to read. The text is so dense as to be downright off-putting.
- the labels/explanations of prints are always somewhere else and one has to page back and forth to figure out what is what
- the labels on the guide graphics are simply ridiculously faint - they don't stand out enough - no excuse for that
PLEASE: somebody make an interactive web site for this book in which one can get an overview of the Milky Way map and make objects/views described in the book clickable. That would be so cool and help one to visualize what is where.
Benson does his best to creatively display locations of things pictured but having a clickable "map" would be so much better.
If there were such a thing, I'd buy one for everyone on my Christmas list! I think it would be amazing and far better a guide than this or any book could be.

In Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle, author and filmmaker Michael Benson assembles an outstanding collection of astronomical images from observatories around the world and in space. We live in a golden age of astronomical observation. Some of the resulting images are well known and have inspired millions of people; others, equally breathtaking, have never been published before. For this book, Benson has culled the very best, and organized them into a thrilling journey through space and time to the universe's great places, ranging from "nearby" nebulae in our own Milky Way galaxy to the light of the Hubble Deep Field that has traveled billions of light-years.
Every bit as innovative and beautiful as the author's successful Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes but far grander in conception, Far Out is an inspiring work of art and science on the cutting edge of human perception.
[With Far Out] Take a good long look into space-time. –Los Angeles Times
Far out by Michael Benson proves that putting the photographable universe into a book doesn’t dampen its beauty. – Men’s Journal
An exquisite picture book of outer space. –San Diego Union Tribune
“2001: A Space Odyssey and Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle: both are inspirational moving pictures. Far Out punches deep into space, like a series of jump cuts. It is a truly cinematic experience to see these magnificent images in rapid succession. Like the Star-Child in Stanley Kubrick’s vision of a Mankind evolving to a higher level, Far Out inspires me again to imagine a Universe filled with life, and each of those billions of pinpoints being orbited by worlds and beings of breathtaking beauty. Very moving pictures.”
—Douglas Trumbull, Oscar-winning Visual Effects Supervisor, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek, The Motion Picture
“The inventive, imaginative Michael Benson here unfolds the universe in its multiple dimensions.”
—Dava Sobel, author of Longitude, Galileo’s Daughter, and The Planets
“That the images in Michael Benson’s latest book, Far Out, are completely mind-blowing goes without saying. What’s especially dazzling about this volume, though, is the way Benson’s text takes the shards of those blown minds and completely reconfigures them into such a startlingly new and fresh awareness: a trembling awe all its own.”
—Lawrence Weschler, author of Everything That Rises and Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees
“First he gave us the beauty of our solar system’s neighbor worlds in Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes, but Michael Benson hasn’t stopped there. In this spectacular new offering he gives us the universe itself, presented in such stunning and vivid detail that I am awed by every page. Open this book, take the journey, and be amazed.”
—Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon and A Passion for Mars

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Journalist, filmmaker and photographer Benson follows his book Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes with an even more stellar array of astronomical photographs that offer glorious views of space, moving successively from close to home to the outermost regions of the universe, moving simultaneously farther from Earth and farther back in time. Benson's emphasis on the correlation between geological time and astronomical distance sets this book far apart from others. Light rays, he says, move like ripples in a pond... so vast that the ripples extending out from each event take thousands, millions, or even billions of years to echo off its banks. Light reaching Earth now from the Witch Head nebula, some 740 light-years distant, was generated in the 14th century. Elsewhere, remote galactic clusters, aggregate bonfires shining across the blackness of deep time, cast light as old as Pangaea, the Earth's ancient supercontinent, which broke up to create today's continents. Benson illuminates the vast scale of the universe and its workings with large-scale quasi-cinematic photos that reveal scintillating stars, galaxies and Rorschach-like nebulae in their true colors. The 228 color photos are spectacular and enhanced with three eight-page gatefolds. (Nov.)

First off let me say I LOVE IT! Despite the criticisms that follow I would give it 10 stars if that were possible. As an amateur astro-imager I was blown away by the photographs and find something new on every page to aspire to (even though I know many of the objects are not reachable with the modest equipment I can afford). I will admit I have not had time yet to read all the text but have found that that I have read to be put in a very interesting and easy to understand form and am anxious to find the time to read it cover to cover. The quality of the publishing is obvious and leaves little room for improvement. That being said I will now offer some constructive criticisms. The way the book is laid out and in the interests of preserving the integrity of each photograph there are no page numbers nor text on any of the pages with photos. There is an "index page" in each section but without page numbers to use as a reference I found it very difficult to know what I was looking at in many instances. Even on the index pages the NGC, Messier, or IC numbers are often omitted and left me questioning where exactly in the sky this object is located. I don't think a small page number down in the corner would have detracted from the photograph and even a small designation number there would have been a big help in navigating through the book. Even with these lacking I would still highly recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest in the wonders of the universe. It is a very large book but still can be held in the lap while looking through it but as with any large coffee table style book, it needs to be handled carefully to protect the spine and cover. I had to wait 2 months for Amazon to get it for me but it was well worth the wait!

This is the best book I have & the best I’ve read. I’ve gifted over 20 copies of it. This book clearly, cogently & beautifully represents our place in space & time. I would love if someone would confirm to me @skybiome on Twitter whether I found the following error: p 316, caption for CFHT deep field image pp318-319, it says the blue-tinted galaxies are “tens to hundreds of millions of miles away”, but it should be LY not miles, right? It also says “yellow ones “are billions of miles away” but it should be billions of LYs, right?

This is not my primary topic of interest, but recently I kind of caught the "space bug" and picked up a few books. All of them look very interesting, but this book, with its full page, and multiple page, high quality images is absolutely amazing and on a pedestal unto itself. Yes, it's a big book. Yes, it's a heavy book. Yes, you probably should buy some type of special gloves to hold it, and yes, you better not sneeze while holding the book open (maybe buy two copies, one to read and one to save). However, it is the kind of book you can look at for many hours and over many years. I have no choice but to assume the accompanying text is accurate. In closing, Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle by Michael Benson, is an essential purchase if you want to see "out there" and let your imagination wander.

Well, now that I have started to read this book I wanted to leave a few early thoughts. The images are top quality and amazing! The text is somewhat poetic and I wish I had someone to discuss it with. This is the kind of book that you could look at forever and even read parts again. Infinitely fascinating.

I heartily agree with the majority of other reviewers about the quality of images, the book design itself, paper quality and the amount of text provided. I have a number of other books on astronomy, many larger, heavier and much more scientific than this, but for it's size and thickness, there is an impressive amount of photos provided.
What really was unique was the author's referencing events in world history and relating their periods of time to the distances in light years of stars, galaxies, nebulae, etc. I've not seen that done before: he's basically looking forward into the universe and backwards in time. The light of a star you see tonight might have left when Ghengiz Khan was crushing the Persians, or the first mammals were appearing on earth. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn about the universe without all the math!

I have a small collection of books on astronomy and they have some beautiful images in them but nothing compares to the celestial wonder and imagery in this book. This book has some of the most stunning pictures I have ever seen. The writing is explanatory of the objects themselves and also gives historical activities on Earth when the light we see today stared on its long journey toward us. The book itself is fairly large probably about 19 inches square and the paper used is of highest quality giving the images a beautiful finish. There are some really great books on astronomy but if you're starting off collecting today this would be one of the first books on the subject that I would buy - just fantastic. (You might want some cotton gloves from a pharmacist so as not to finger print the images.)
