James Bovard is the author of Last Rights: The Death of American Liberty (2023) Public Policy Hooligan (2012), Attention Deficit Democracy (2006), and eight other books. He is a member of the USA Today Board of Contributors, a frequent contributor to the New York Post, and has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Playboy, and the Washington Post, and is a fellow with the Libertarian Institute. His books have been translated into Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, and Korean.

The Wall Street Journal called Bovard 'the roving inspector general of the modern state,' and Washington Post columnist George Will called him a 'one-man truth squad.' His 1994 book Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty received the Free Press Association's Mencken Award as Book of the Year. His book Terrorism and Tyranny won the Lysander Spooner Award for the Best Book on Liberty in 2003. He received the Thomas Szasz Award for Civil Liberties work, awarded by the Center for Independent Thought, and the Freedom Fund Award from the National Rifle Association.

His writings have been been publicly denounced by the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Postmaster General, and the chiefs of the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. International Trade Commission, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In 2015, the Justice Department sought to suppress his articles in USA Today.

This book is hilariously entertaining, when the reader is not pulling his hair out. I have told people that once you read the first ten pages of this book you know all you need to know about American agriculture. But go ahead and read the book. The information Mr. Bovard has cataloged boggles the mind. Where does one even find this information? Remember, 1) this book was written in 1989 which was before Al Gore invented the internet, and 2) the USDA is not a very transparent organization.

Want to know the difference between a "marketing loan" and a gift? Read the book.

I have lived in the middle of farm country for fifty of my fifty-nine years, but it is only in the past three that I have smelled the coffee regarding American agriculture. Actually it was the CAFOs I smelled. Mr. Bovard's book is eye-opening. And his writing style is better than Mencken because, as C.S. Lewis said, when a person sees through things he must see through it TO something rather than nothing. Otherwise he is merely a skeptic. Bovard is both funny and spot-on. Bottom line: no farm bill.

Reasons why "entitlements" and price supports wrecked the USA as our rightful place as superpower of world agriculture market. Extremely accurate and well written

Book was written a generation ago and is very dated for that reason. American agriculture has severe problems that were not clear then. It suffers today from overproduction, leading to lower prices that drive farmers out of business, extensive toxic waste environmental problems, animal cruelty from overcrowding, etc. Dept of Agriculture is big cheerleader for overproduction. Author's libertarian/skeptical-about-govt perspective might offer useful remedies if he were writing it today.

This, along with the Free Trade fiasco book, are two of this authors finest books and written in an over-the-top, bombastic, but shockingly accurate way.

Learn how the government wastes $100 billion a year, which is about 1000 bucks for each 'hard' taxpayer out there.

This book lays out in detail the history, and the basic *fiasco* (which it is) leading up to today's farm outlays in each years farm bills. The pork that goes to each industry is enormous, and wasteful, and is laid out in this book. Even though this book was written a while ago, it still speaks to today, being that we are still paying scads of money for outlays to farms that are raking in large amounts of money, not "the family farm" as some try to portray.
