I have 100 gallon plastic in ground pond which is only 18" deep and is approximately 4'W x 7'L. Currently it's -6 below and none of the Pond has iced over. I see our fish directly under the heater when it's cold. I keep the water circulating 24/7 in the pond with a pond pump which also has a fountain head in the middle of the pond. Recently we had over 36" of snow and the pond was burried in a drift. There was a 9" or so portion of the pond that was kept open. Most of the pond was slush in the water but my fish came through it all with no problem. I think it was due to the combination of the circulating water and the heater as well. I would recommend this pond heater to anyone who has a plastic preformed pond. None of the pond has froze even in sub zero temps which I find amazing and I'm sure this Pond Heater has helped keep it Ice Free.

Update: 2/15/2009

Since this time I have had three of these things and I won't purchase another since they only last one season. In fact the last one I bought didn't last that long. When it works it works great but just not long enough for me to justify the purchase. I'm keeping my pond ICE free with the fountain with the head removed, and a waterfall just to keep the water circulating. I wish I could change the stars I gave originally but it won't let me.

I've had a 500 gal pond for 15 years! I use these because they are available locally. This is important because they fail so often. I've sent 3 in for failing under warranty, but this is such a hassle. I've now gone through about 12 of these. They just don't last. They either just stopped working (ice in the pond), or trip the breaker because they are water logged. I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, it very seldom freezes here, so they are only use 2-3 months a year. I'd suggest another brand, they seldom last more than a year! I have another brand (exposed elements) which I've used for "backup" for 10 years, with no problems. I just don't like the exposed elements.

I actually read previous reviews but, still went ahead and bought this. What a mistake that was.
I live in eastern North Carolina so we do not get too many days/nights of freezing temperatures. However, we also have a fish pond with Koi in it. We were forecasted to have some freezing nights after Christmas so, my wife and I decided to buy this De Icer to keep any gasses from building in the pond if it did freeze over.
It arrived as scheduled. We followed all instructions"to the letter" and set it in our pond.
It worked the first night and the second.
The temperature then rose so, we switched it off.
About 5 days later we were again forecasted for a freeze and we switched the de-icer back on. and absolutely nothing happened.
The reviews I had read all said similar things and I assumed that those folks probably did not follow the instructions. Well, we absolutely followed them and it still only lasted for 2 nights (one freeze event).
Never again....

I've had 2 of these and neither lasted more than 2 seasons. Both leaked and tripped the GFCI. I would consider them again for about $8-$10 but not $28-$35. While they were working they kept a hole of about 8"-12" open all winter. This was sufficient to keep the fish alive. I'll need to find something either cheaper with a decent warranty, or more expensive with a proven track record.

This heater worked inconsistently. Sometimes our pond was unfrozen, but it also froze over completely. The pond is only 3 feet deep by about 6 feet in diameter so we had hoped to keep at least a small portion open. Since the heater wasn't very expensive, I decided not to spend the postage necessary to send it back.

well first off was ordered dec 22 a busy time of the year for shipping. It was at my door on jan 4th all considered i didn't think it was bad for the time of year. opened it up and looks well build and sturdy. I put it in the pond few days later and it melted a hole in the ice by next day . couple days later it had a 2' area around it melted I was happy thinking I got a good deal. a couple days later the temps warmed up and took some top layers of ice off the pond by the weather not the heater. then a day or so later I was taking my dog out and saw it was frozen over. checked power and power was good in the cord of the heater yet it was no longer working.
so now im back to hammering a hole in the pond again to let gases out which was why I bought the thing. waited a few days hoping for a warm up to get it out but didn't happen so i had to hammer and pick at ice around it to get it out very frustrating whole deal at this point.
emailing company about heater i get several back telling me to return insured (meaning im paying to return a defective heater.) and they don't offer exchanges now due to inventory whatever. so i had to order another. this whole deal is very very irritating and i haven't dealt with the return end yet.
so at this point its getting a bad review and we'll see if an update becomes worse or better depending on this already ridiculous return mess

update:
well after 2weeks waiting I had to email them to get a response, as i was going to start a claim with amazon if they didn't respond. wow that got them to respond , they are giving back my original amount I paid but nothing for the money it cost me to send it back to them even though it was with in the 30 day return period.
