DTI Publications is honored to have worked with John Farnam over the past year as he's written and refined The Farnam Method of Defensive Handgunning. We believe it's been well worth the wait. Farnam knows this subject like no one else!
About the Author
John Farnam is president of Defense Training International, Inc. and has been teaching defensive firearms courses for over 25 years. He is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, a major (Retired) in the U.S. Army Reserve and a police officer with many years of practical experience. Mr. Farnam is the author of three books :Streetwise, The Farnam Method of Defensive Shotgun and Rifle Shooting and The Farnam Method of Defensive Handgunning. Each year, he travels across the country teaching the latest defensive firearms techniques to police departments, federal and state agencies as well as foreign governments. He is recognized as an acclaimed and prominent lecturer, expert witness and consultant. The American Tactical Shooting Association awarded John Farnam the "Tactical Advocate of the Year" in recognition of his commitment to presenting dependable tactical information to those attending his training programs.

If you're looking for practical, reliable, accurate, responsible, effective, easy to understand, solid instruction on the use of handguns, you've found it. The material is presented very well and Farnam does a fantastic job of explaining the subject and covers all the major areas of tactical handgun use, from proper stance and grip to firearm and ammo selection to safe handling and storage, and even includes a small section on first-aid for gunshot wounds.
I think what separates Farnam's book from others in the same genre has to do with two things:
First, he gives a pretty complete picture. He doesn't hit every aspect of handgun ownership of course, but regarding the essential nuts and bolts of defensive handgun use he does a really fine job of putting things together into a nice neat comprehensible package. As some other reviewers have said, if this were your only book on the subject you'd have a really strong foundation.
Second, Farnam's instruction has an underlying tone that goes deeper than simply "point and shoot". It certainly isn't a philosophy book, and moreover doesn't treat the subject with the depth or ruggedness of Jeff Cooper, but on the off chance somebody reads his book as an "outsider" to gun culture and/or considers firearms unnecessary, somehow inherently evil or otherwise too dangerous for "normal" people to have and use, as well as perceives the people who do as "abnormal", "extreme", "right-wing", etc. and yet still considers themselves logical and open to reason - for those people Farnam gives some food for thought.
For example, as he admirably puts it, referencing the Second Amendment, "In a free society the Militia is composed of every able-bodied citizen who is capable of owning and bearing military arms in voluntary associations, independent of government. The Militia is not to be confused with the National Guard or other government-controlled military organizations." The Militia's central purpose was and is, "...by virtue of their individually armed presence, to dissuade would-be dictators and other tyrants from imposing slavery upon the people."
The above is one of the primary reasons to support firearms ownership; it is also one of the main reasons to buy Defensive Handgunning. Although the book isn't the end-all-be-all on the subject (for example, specific methods of carry, firearms maintenance, etc. aren't covered), to be fair it doesn't claim to be, and within its scope the book is very difficult to beat. There are a lot of really good books on the subject, but Farnam covers the basics with almost no "fluff", and does so in relatively few words with a method that is accessible and achievable by any average person. That's the primary reason I chose to review this book in particular and why I recommend it highly.
Read it and gain insight into one of America's great minds. Farnam is one part warrior and one part philosopher with a dash of battlefield poet.
John Farnam has years of experience in law enforcement use of firearms, and this book shows it! Want a book that can serve as a tutorial AND as a subsequent reference book? Farnam is your author! Almost completely devoid of empty fluff, Farnam covers everything, sometimes even to the point of repetition. You will use this book both for self education and as a nearly encyclopedic reference for years to come.
