Product Description

FarPoint Astro Bahtinov Focus Masks make focusing for astrophotography easy. Works with all DSLR cameras or CCD imagers and is great for cameras with or without liveview. Simply place the Bahtinov Focus-Mask over the end of your telescope, find a reasonably bright star near your target, take a 3-5 second picture and view the diffraction spikes. Change your focus, take another picture and again, view your diffraction spikes. Is the center spike moving further from center? Then change the direction your focusing and try another picture. Watch the direction the spikes are moving and when the center spike passes the middle of the other two spikes, change direction and fine tune your tuning knobs until the center spike is in the middle. Your now in perfect focus. They are strong enough and light enough to fully support themselves whether you hang them from the end of a rigid dew shield or from a plastic dew shield attached to the end of an SCT. These are not paper thin masks. Bahtinov masks are made with light weight, thick, yet resilient plastic, will not break and will bend only when forced. You need not remove the dew shield to use these masks, just hang the mask from the end of the shield. This enables you to check your focus as frequently as you like throughout your imaging session. Our masks are designed to match the focal length of your scope. This focus mask was designed for 3.5" to 6.5" dew shield diameters.

An astrophotographer buddy of mine (Erik Larsen) mentioned a Bahtinov mask as his weapon of choice for getting sharp focus. I had read about them and assumed they were a gimmick.

But I've begun doing astrophotography and even when using 10x zoom on my DSLR's LCD getting a really sharp focus is a challenge.

I looked at creating my own mask (there is a weblink that generates the proper mask), but after trying to cut one myself it's clear that paying someone for a pre-made mask is vastly preferable.

I picked the cheapest solution I could find - the Bahtinov mask by Farpoint Astro via Amazon. The same masks are sold elsewhere for more.

While the mask is a bit oversized for my Canon 70-200mm lens... it does work over the lens hood and it also fits over the dew shield on my 80mm refractor.

Any bright point of light will do. Shoot... zoom in, check the spikes, make a minor focus adjustment and repeat until everything lines up. The result is pretty dead on. And you don't really need to use it only with astrophotography. It will work well with any moderately bright light source.

Mechanically I'd have preferred that the nylon screws had some sort of rubber/grippy plastic to cling better to the dew shield or lens hood, but I found that it works quite well on the lens hood if the knob side of the nylon bolts are placed over the lens hood. If you get one, you'll understand what I mean).

Of course it's one more thing to carry around, but it must might save the day, I mean NIGHT to get that otherwise elusive sharp focus.

I see competitive products that are much more expensive. Somehow I doubt that they are going to perform better.

I recommend this mask. Thank you Pavel Bahtinov for inventing it!

Quality Product nice a thick works as designed. If your into or wanting to get into Astrophotography this will make your life easier. Focus is essential for great photos of the heavens and planets. This Bahtinov Mask takes the guess work out as to focusing and makes it a snap instead of a hassle. Just put this over the end of your scope, point at a bright star look for the diffraction pattern as shown on the included instruction and your ready to go. It takes a few minutes and can save you hours.

Yes, it does indeed work well, as the others say. My only complaint is that mine broke in two - three edges snapped to make two pieces. Not sure what force it encountered, but obviously it didn't survive storage after packing up the gear one night. I'll order a replacement, but do wish the material was not so brittle.

It works great to get focus. I was amazed the first time I used it. Makes my life way easier knowing I am in focus before I take a long exposure. Would definitely recommend!!
