Review
A terrific resource. . . . An affordable classic., Dramatics
One of the best surveys of costume in the Western world we've seen. What makes this book so valuable is the detail in the more than 800 sketches and the attention given not only to the outerwear but to underwear, hats, footwear, hair styles, accessories, jewelry, fabrics, and colors worn by men, women, and children. This...could easily become the design bible of any costume shop., Stage Director
This detailed fashion survey contains a wealth of information...I look forward to using this valuable and much needed updating., Midwest Book Review

I am making costumes for the Ren Fair and thought this book would be interesting. It is. My one criticism would be that it is all hand drawn art by the author....no reproductions of portraits or the like. But the drawings do tell the story and there a goodly number of them. White there is a lot of historical information about the periods as well as descriptions of the costumes of the day the author writes in what I would call a conversational tone. It's like she was sitting next to you giving you a trove of information. I'm really enjoying it. If you have an interest in the development of fashion, you will like this book.

I used this book for a few classes during my undergrad program in tech thea. This book was a savior. It breaks down the eras into genders and styles into specific articles. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in costuming and fashion history. I feel it does give brief overviews of some parts but there are always other books to reference for more detailed information. But for great overviews and superb illustrations THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK

This book is very interesting if you are interested in Fashion through the years 1200-2000 and seeing how the fashion has changed through the years. Whether you sew for cloth dolls or minidolls like I do or just for yourself or the stage I would highly recommend this book. Even if you don't sew and want to find out for yourself what changes in fashion were made, it is a book you won't want to put down and I highly recommend it.

This book is well researched--I recognized many illustrations from older books, and takes on an enormous length of time. I found it interesting, although not too well suited (ha ha, pun) for kindle. I'd like to see a companion book of patterns for some of these outfits. I bet that all of our cosplay friends would like that, too.

fair illustrations considering the amount of years covered. Good information. I think it will come in handy for me when costuming kids theatre.

Good illustrations, having pictures would be nice, but it has everything you ever wanted to know through the ages and descriptions and names off all the garments and pieces. Very good buy.

A good summary of costume fashion

A good summary if you want to have an overview of costume fashion that covers a long period, but for further details, it would be better to get a book that focuses on a special period.

Great illustrations.

I bought this to tea dye and put in an art journal. I love the illustrations throughout, however, I do not like the paper. It is a matte finish, which was what I wanted. You can see right through the papers, it’s quality is not so great. The book has been used, and was in excellent condition.
