New Year - weight loss. ugh. (yeah, I am getting started a little late - don't judge!) I downloaded four free apps to find the best one to help me manage my plan: Calorie Counter (this one), Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal, Diet & Food Tracker by SparkPeople, and Lose It! by FitNow. You'll probably see similar reviews to this one on each of those products.

Wow this app is good - especially to be free. Some of the better features are recipe suggestions in line with my desired weight loss plan and LOTS of pre-programmed foods from restaurants & grocery stores. However, I found a better app for me (also free) which is the Lose It! app.

Lose It! allows you to add in foods that aren't just those pre-programmed from restaurants & groceries, which is not an option with this Calorie Counter. Let's face it, every food in the world will never be in one database, so having the ability to add stuff is more realistic than expecting to only eat what Calorie Counter can account for. Being able to create your own foods & recipes allows you to expand the food database outside of the created app and really make it work for you. This alone makes Lose It! the better app for real diet tracking.

I also downloaded a companion app that is a restaurant calorie counter, so I can accurately add in those foods I eat. I really think I would have had to do this with any of the apps to really get accurate info, but again, I could not have entered the foods in this Calorie Counter database had they not already been there.

Also, this Calorie Counter requires you to be connected to the internet to use, but the Lose IT! app does not. This is worth it, too, because you aren't always around a wireless signal when you want to log your food/exercise.... and if you are anything like me will forget unless you can do it while you are thinking about it.

Lose It! also lets you create new exercises - I have not utilized this feature.

At first I was excited to use this app, but over the next few days there were several instances where the app had an "unexpected error" and could not be accessed. Having to wait several hours or a day to enter food choices is ineffective. I deleted it and chose something else.

I used the calories counter for 4 months and along with walking 5 to 7 times a week I successfully lost 23 pounds. I think this is just as good as the weight watcher programs that we have to pay for. I have downloaded it on my Android phone and my Kindle Fire.

Tracking daily calorie intake is easy, and breaking down the carbs/proteins/fats is done automatically. Using this app makes the hardest part off getting in shape easy. And the app also tracks your weight, and much more. This is my daily tool to stay on track to finally get in shape and stay there.

I got this app because of all the great reviews and as soon as I installed it I started to fill in my info. Long story short, I wanted to add my workout for yesterday plus my calorie intake for that day. Apparently I cannot enter my weight for yesterday becaused I had already enter my weight for today (first thing I did). Ok, not so bad, until I try to enter my workout for yesterday and it doesn't let me. I get this message: "In order to estimate the energy burned for your activities and exercise you must enter your weight." That's exactly what I've been trying to do for the past three hour but you don't let me!!!!! Arrggg!!! So frustrating. I'm not dealing with this app anymore. It gets deleted. I'm sticking to "Lose it."

I got this app to maintain my calorie intake but found that it rarely works with Kindle Fire HD. Even with strong connection, it keeps crushing when I try to add food items. The search is very similar to the one on the actual website but gives an error when trying to search which is pretty annoying. Definitely needs an update to run more smoothly.

This program is awesome! It allows you to input your daily weight, add in exercise and also list foods eaten. There are GOBS of restaurant/brand names programmed in so that you can easily find your food item. And the weight chart stays on the screen for a full two weeks so you can remember your progress. I would highly recommend this app to anyone wanting a quick way to keep a food journal.
