In this one, Nick meets twelve-year old orphan Scotty, who impresses him with his engaging nature and upbringing similar to Nick's own. While Nick is palling around with Scotty, talking him up to Sam and making noises about adopting the boy, she's dealing with the realization that her endometriosis-induced infertility (discussed in the previous book, FATAL JUSTICE) may not be permanent and she could conceive, and with treatment even bring a child to term. She's also dealing with Harry's orders to swear off diet cola, which leads to a bit of humor as she tries to haul her butt through a day without the nearly gallon of the stuff she routinely used to drink.
This book can use the humor, because the solution to the mystery (following a couple more murders) is kind of dark, involving nonconsensual sadomasochism, abuse of power, threats both political and physical, and an attack on one of the female detectives under Sam's command. Sam succeeds, but at a pretty high cost to herself and those who care for her.
Then there's that awful Peter, a man from her past whom she thought was going away for life but now has been released from prison. Who can she trust and how can she keep Nick safe, too?
PS Drink tons of caffeine if this one keeps up you late. OR start reading EARLY in the morning, the better to avoid yet another set of late-night reads because you can't put this one down.
Lieutenant Samantha Holland and Senator Nick Cuppuano are engaged and are the delight of the news media. Everyone wants to know where they are and what they are doing. Every little bit of news about them is followed by many. This is definitely not to Sam’s liking. However, she puts up with it because of Nick.
Now Nick and Samantha find themselves in the middle of another murder. This time it is the cleaning woman of the Hart building and she cleans Nick’s office. She was brutally beaten and then killed. Tragically, she was pregnant at the time. The father is a sitting senator. Before they can turn around, another cleaning lady is killed and she also is pregnant. Now it is a race against time to find the killer before someone else is killed. Who is doing this and what is going on? Add in some other twists and turns and the novel is really exciting.
The book is very good and makes you want to read more of the series.
