Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star [Noble Phantasm Edition]
PlayStation 4
Automaton is a spiritron computer, which exists on the moon and has the power to grant any wish. All across the spiritron-constructed virtual world, SE.RA.PH., Servants and the Masters who control them fight for the right to be the Moon Cell Automaton’s one owner in a ceremonial conflict known as the Holy Grail War.
Now, the Servant Nero Claudius and her Master have won the Holy Grail War and have obtained the universal wishing mechanism, the Holy Grail.
They also obtained the Regalia, a ring that proves their kingship. With it, they rule over their once-enemy Servants and start a new beginning on the moon’s new world.
But a new enemy has appeared before them. And this enemy has something that shouldn’t exist: another Regalia.

Imagine my surprise when Amazon showed be both the PS4 version and a PSVita version!
Well, a few months later I bought the Fate/Extella PS Vita limited edition on Amazon and this is where we are right now.
The contents of both versions, including the size of the box, are Identical. The exception being the blue band at the top saying PlayStation Vita instead of PS4 and of course the PS4 game case and disc or
PSVITA game case and cartridge inside the box.
Because I own the open PS4 version, I just couldn't break the factory seal on my Vita version.
I do actually have a lot of factory sealed games but they are all duplicates of opened playable games in my collection. Curiosity was getting to me though, how different was the Vita version from the PS4 version, if at all? As luck would have it, I found a used copy of the Vita game at a local store for $10 so my sealed box stays sealed.
I'm happy to report that the only difference is the control setup and the graphics quality is downgraded for the smaller PS Vita screen. For being an extremely frantic hack and slash game, I was very surprised that there is little slowdown or frame dropping on the Vita. This is one of the Vita games that supports cross save (only with a PS+ subscription) so theoretically you could take your game from console to portable and back again on the same game save if you really wanted to. You would need to own both the PS4 and Vita copies of the game and pay Sony a subscription fee to save your games online, so it's only an added benefit if you throw down a lot of cash to take advantage of it.
Also if you own both the console and portable versions, trophies only occur once. This means if you earn a trophy on one version, it clears it for both versions and can't be earned twice. Many Vita games earn their own trophies, separate from their PS4 counterpart, but this one doesn't.
Overall I was rather impressed with the game, especially since I am very new to the series. I was aware of the previous games and the multiple anime series connected to it, but the Fate series was one I mostly avoided, feeling it was too late in the story for me to jump in.
Even worse, I watched many many hours of the multiple anime series on Funimation and Crunchyroll which left me even more confused. You literally need a flowchart to figure out which part goes where, or if it even belongs anywhere at all. I am still not 100% sure what is Canon and what isn't, but it is entertaining stuff.
Also, I am not sure if you can jump in and play this game without the history and backstory. It really depends heavily on it's own established lore and expects you to already be familiar with the Fate storyline.
The game play tutorial is about the same way, it says "Here's our controls, this is how to use them, now go kick butt." I love that, but others may find the learn as you go trial and error system a little frustrating.
Fate/Extella The Umbra Star was my jump in point and I am quite happy that I did. There are newer and older games in the series that I would recommend over this one to newcomers, but if you are already into the series, this is definitely a great game, and one of the best collector editions to come out in years due to its incredible value for money.
In summary, the game plays a bit like Dynasty Warriors, but not in a bad way. Defeat hordes of enemies and clear areas while avoiding losing your captured areas to the enemy.
The cloth wall scroll is very nice, the hardcover art book is amazing (with lots of good backstory info) and the 16 character cards are a lot better than I ever expected them to be. All this in a heavy cardboard (cigar box quality) box with a magnet and fabric tab to open and close it.
Even if the game was terrible, the Noble Phantasm Edition box alone would get five stars. So many limited editions are going to throwaway card stock boxes now. What a shame, and some special editions don't even come with the game... what's up with that????
Let's just get to an overall score for the game itself, this ended up becoming an incredibly long review.
Fate/Extella The Umbra Star. Score 8/10. If you get the Noble Phantasm Edition boxed set add half a point.
Despite fighting the camera more often than not (seems to be a trend with Warriors-style games anyway), I'd still give the game 5 stars for story and characters.
If you can get past the (lack of) camera control -- more on that below -- and the repetitiveness as you play through three routes (i.e. perspectives) of the same story essentially then it's great. You have to be more invested in the characters, the story too but especially the characters I'd say, to get into it. Otherwise the Warriors-style gameplay and trying to breeze through the story part will burn you out quickly.
If you don't get the outcome you want from a bond moment in My Room you can save scum and retry.
The story does make references to Fate/Extra, but you don't have to have played it for it to make sense since it just talks about who won the war in that game.
And you do have some camera control with the R stick, but it's so free moving that it's a hassle to use. Also, no real lock-on system so even though you can press R on major enemies (e.g. boss servants) you can't really lock on and stay locked onto them -- you need to keep adjusting the camera. L will become your best friend for readjusting the camera back to being in front of you and R for dashing to move between sectors faster (every second counts) when not using it to try and get a feeble lock on to a boss servant. You'll adjust to this, but it will always be a hassle to deal with.
Allies are weak and won't last too long, especially in rooms jam packed with enemies, even weak ones. Getting to them is also a nuisance and you're better off trying to leave them alone and hope for the best if you aren't nearby or if your objective isn't nearby and timed (and you don't see a timer, but after a while your progress will be undone in some chapters if you take too long to complete an objective). If they all die you get a Mission Failed. Leveling them up in their Side Stories won't help them out in the main stories, but they are fun to go through anyway. They're also much shorter at three chapters long per character, but still have interesting stories overall.
The translation is great as well! They made sure to use terms that are commonly used in the English fandom, which is a huge plus for fans like me.
If you aren't already familiar with the Fate/ franchise it may not be quite as accessible, as quite a few plot points build off of prior entries in the Fate/Extra series, including a few references to Fate/Extra CCC which was never translated into English. That said, the Fate/Extra Last Encore anime should be coming out later this year which may help newcomers.
