The two heroines come from seemingly very different backgrounds and get into a dangerous, violent situation. In hindsight I like the fact that the characters are proactive; Nadia could've walked away or begged her way off of the planet but chose to accomplish something positive, and Fay turned from in-it-for-the-money mercenary to something better, for believable reasons. There's an element of hero worship here, as in "I wish I could be like X; oh look, here's a master of X for me to imitate!" Nothing wrong with that though. The fact that the main characters are both centauroid "taurs" is handled in an interesting way that makes the fact matter to the story at several points.
4.5 stars if possible, deducting some for typos and wishing for a bit more world-building within the book itself. If you want more info on the setting, the main book is (last I checked) cheap, and it's got lots and lots of background material.
Fate's Fangs gives I full lighting of the HSD universe and helps explain how post human society functions.
I felt attached to the two main characters pretty easily. The plot and events that unfold in the story are invigorating and well thought out.
While the beginning of the book may lead you to think that it would be NSFW, since Nadia (one of the two main characters) starts out in the story as a prostitute.
At the end I found myself shipping the two main characters with enthusiasm.
11/10 would pay double for a sequel or another story in the same universe
At its core, Fate's Fangs is a story about a street urchin who found some stability only to be kicked back out onto the street after an accident that she had nothing to do with and that set in motions the wheels of political machinations that pitted the most powerful in a city against her.
Nadia, the main character, is particularly well written with her thoughts clearly explained and relayed, giving her very realistic reactions to the events going on around her.
There are a few grammar mistakes that I've noticed, but they don't generally detract from the quality of the book.
Fate's Fangs is not what I expected. Admittedly though, I am not sure what I did expect. However, I ended up really liking it. The story flowed very well, it was pleasant to read and I thought the characters were well done. The story even gripped me, making it hard to put it down a few times.
I definitely recommend it. For fans of HC SVNT DRACONES it is a must. For those who are interested in the game but don't know much about it yet it is a good introduction to the setting. For those are are simply interested by the summary or the gorgeous coverart, I think you will like it as well.
All in all a great read, I might be biased as I like the RPG system this comes from.
