Editorial Reviews

Americas #1 dad returns for another season of family adventures! Robert Young is Jim Anderson, patriarch extraordinaire to his loving but sometimes misguided family. With Bud (Billy Gray) taking up the practice of mind-reading, Kathy (Lauren Chapin) rebelling at summer camp, Betty (Elinor Donahue) discovering that Mother Margaret (Jane Wyatt) has been placed in her English class as a student: it is certain that the father who knows best is going to have his hands full! By the fourth season, Father Knows Best was a prime-time fixture for NBC, although the program would soon return to the CBS lineup for its last two seasons. Get ready for a trip back in time to 1950s suburbia with the Andersons in Father Knows Best Season Four!

Although seasons 1-3 have been wonderful via SHOUTS! great dvd sets season 4 hits it out of the park from the great news on the back of the dvd box "all 33 Uncut episodes" to each of the episodes themselves. Many are excellent episodes and the rest are all very good television. A standout is MR BEAL MEETS HIS MATCH, this rarely seen episode which was never shown in the package that The Family Channel aired in the 1980's and early 1990's is a dark and sinister episode with a really good payoff. Another standout is the episode in which legendary actress Greer Garson guest stars. After watching the entire set you will feel sad there aren't any more episodes left in the set. The cast is now hitting their stride and totally believable as a family, Robert Young and Jane Wyatt turn in outstanding performances week after week, Billy Gray's perfomances were always on the mark and he could be comical and yet serious and displayed a great range as Bud as did Elinor Donahue as Betty, the entire crew are all working in tandem with the cast to turn out a show that has become along with LEAVE IT TO BEAVER a classic example of 1950's televsion and something that all of us have wished life was really like if only for 1/2 hour a day! Print quality is clear and sound is crisp on most of the episodes if not all again especially taking into account these shows have not been restored possibly because FKB has not been in syndication in years and it took a while to figure out where the rights to broadcast and home video really belonged - and thanks must go to SHOUT! for releasing the classic show along with thanks to Robert Young's grandson Bill Proffit, the estate of Eugene Rodney and SONY for opening ther vaults to SHOUT! so unedited episodes could be utilized!Read more ›

We've heard from Elinor Donahue and Lauren Chapin on previous FKB releases, but not from Billy Gray (Bud). Mr. Gray wrote me an email a few months ago stating that he'd be happy to do commentary on some episodes. Apparently, he hasn't been asked. My question for Shout Factory is: Why not??? I would love to hear Mr. Gray's perspective and memories of the show!

Perhaps THE best "family" style sitcom ever produced. Stories and situations were believable, not contrived as was most shows of its genre and time were. You actually feel the warmth and love that the cast portrayed for each other. This series is and was often overlooked because of the popularity of Leave it to Beaver, Donna Reed, and other similar shows, but comparing apples to apples, Father Knows Best stands above them all. If you have never seen this show, then by all means get a few of them. As a bonus, several of the episodes have the original openings with sponsors, and original non-syndicated end themes as well. Only complaint is that some of the episodes are syndication versions, with scenes cut, and end titles faded out before the Screen Gems logo appears. The was one of the very few shows that carried over from radio that was successful on television. The radio series ran from 1949 to 1954. Series ran on TV from 1954 through 1960. Robert Young's real life children were almost carbon copies of his tv family counterparts. Wish it had ran another couple of seasons, but the kids were really not kids any more, and the story lines would have had to been changed a bit. Perhaps that's why it ended when it did. Honorable mentions go to Donna Reed Show, for its depiction of a believable family. Radio episodes of FKB can be heard and downloaded online from the "internet archive". I think these are all now in the public domain.

This is a terrific series, not only for its entertainment value, but also for its moral and social value. If the youths of today were raised on these instead of the superficial one-track sitcoms of today, they would have something wonderful to prepare them for life in an adult world.
The casting was excellent, and I agree with other reviews, Billy Gray was great for the part of Bud. I have not seen another character like him on any program. He was unique.

It interesting to go back to an entirely different world and try to remember what it was really like. I wonder what a young person would think. I wonder if they would even think this could be true. But it was and those values are gone forever. This old series captures things that will probably never appear in history books. A true peek into the past. I find very interesting.

The quality of this DVD is excellent! It will not dissapoint! Like the other Father Knows Best DVD's it is excellent to immerse yourself in simpler, more honest and moral times. Thoroughly enjoyable and the bonus clips are delightful! I highly recommend this DVD for the entire family. Still very relevant today.

You have to love Father Knows Best that celebrates traditional family and great American Values such as hard work, determination, working together, integrity, super character and so much more. While the sibling rivalry is comical and the characters are endearing, this series helps us reminisce as well celebrate great American values.
