Wow. Evalyn was forever in motion and involved in things and somehow, somewhere life caught up with her. She was the daughter and only surviving child of Irish immigrant miner Thomas Walsh, who struck it rich with a the Birdville gold mine in Colorado, Along with the family Evalyn rose from poverty to unheard riches. Her family travelled extensively in Europe, Evalyn lived a lavish lifestyle, was acquainted with royalty and famous Americans, the wife of President Harding and Alice Roosevelt among them. Fascinating also to read her recollections of Thomas Walsh's interactions with King Leopold of Belgium. Evalyn's marriage to the alcoholic son of the Washington Post owner proved to be less happy than she had hoped. And finally the story about how she acquired the Hope diamond and the persistence of the Cartier jeweler. A fascinating story, lengthy and sometimes tempting to just shake her. "What are you thinking?"

Father Struck it Rich was a great read. Written by Evalyn Walsh McLean, the daughter of Thomas Walsh, the man with a nose for gold, recalls names, places, and events with great articulation. Evalyn’s use of words is quite thought-provoking. Many of the people in her book were rather famous in the early 1900’s, and their photos may be found on Google images. To put a face with a name and read further into their background online added depth into the characters of this book.
The reason for my interest in this autobiography is that my grandparents attended the auction of the estate of Evalyn Walsh McLean in 1948. My grandparents furnished their home with the items bought at this auction, including the king’s cradle (King Leopold of Belgium).
It’s a fabulous read, not only for those connected to the McLean Family, but for anyone dreaming of the super-rich at the turn of the century.

Our trip took us through Leadville, Telluride, Rico, Silverton and Ouray, CO. In Ouray we heard about Tom Walsh striking it rich with his Bluebird gold mine. We were able to visualize Evalyn's early life, but the lifestyle described here is incomprehensible to a person outside its orbit of experience. Too late for some, but in the end, valuable lessons were learned.

After spending vacation time in Colorado and seeing the Camp Bird mine site while on jeep trails this book was recommended to us. It provided a great glimpse into what life was like for this individual and her family. Very interesting read.

Amazing how money can control a family from rags to riches to rags. The Victorian era was a period of extreme opposites, much like today.
