My take-this is a very thought provoking novel. The characters evolve in unexpected ways and thus it breaks with the common themes and clichés of most SF. At times it is very violent and not in the way a David Drake novel is violent. I am not sure I have ever read a novel that did not have a single character that I found sympathetic, but that just points to the uniqueness of the writing and how thought provoking it is.
While not considered military SF, it is an excellent work to examine the origins of an insurgency as well as the process of radicalization in a very personal way. It also examines in a different way than I have seen before the ideas and processes of government/power manipulation but again from a personal perspective.
While not a "light" read, I found it a more compelling read that Dune. This would not appeal to everyone or even every reader of SF, but if you want to be challenged to read something that will leave you guessing to the end and thinking well past the last page, this is good choice.
Congratulations on another fine novel! I look forward to reading what comes next.
