Praise for Fatherhood

“This inspirational meditation on fatherhood from former Washington Wizards forward Etan Thomas offers a lot to chew on, both as a primer for thoughtful fathers and children and as a particularly trenchant entry in the ongoing conversation on parenthood and race…Any book that brings the words of Howard Dean and Yao Ming between the same covers is noteworthy.…A tricky line to walk—balancing street cred with idealism, anger with acceptance—but for the most part [Thomas] pulls it off with aplomb. Fathers of any skin color would do well to emulate him.”—The Washington Post

“An insightful book.”—Publishers Weekly

"Etan Thomas not only has skills on the basketball court but more importantly with words and ideas."—Spike Lee

"I would like to salute Etan Thomas. He is a warrior, doing mighty work."—Cornel West

“[Thomas is] a defender of fatherhood.”—New York Daily News

“Really, really moving.” —Soledad O’Brien, CNN

“Etan extends his reach beyond the NBA to helping youth and families throughout America.”—FOX News

“This book is beneficial for fathers, mentors, and sons, no matter how well or how poorly they’re performing in those roles.”—The Washington Times

“Etan Thomas displays his skills off the court pulling together an intimate collection of powerful voices who open up on ending the pain of fatherlessness, the pride and power of being a father, and the promise of a new generation of strong dads”—Essence

“This inspirational book is a call to action, sharing and emphasizing the importance of being present as fathers.”—Daytona Beach News-Journal

If you are a great dad, it's a great read. If you are a father in need of guidance, mentally you can start here. I gifted this book to all of the GREAT Dads in my family for Father's Day. They all loved it, and you will too!

Etan Thomas has put together an amazing collection of quotes about fatherhood from well-known men in our society. He intersperses the quotes with his own well-articulated perspectives and experiences, covering all the highs, the lows, and above all, the joys and importance of being the father we are meant and needed to be to our children. As a counselor putting together a curriculum for a 12-lesson course for young fathers, I am using this book extensively to stir pertinent discussions and reflections. From a "Father's Creed" I recently wrote: "My children only have one father, and that's me. They know and feel this more deeply than I can ever imagine or understand." Etan Thomas' book explains, elaborates, and encourages this truth in many and varied ways. Must reading for dads, especially who grew up with a dad who was absent or only minimally present in their childhood.

This was one of the most inspiring books on fatherhood I have ever read. This a true picture of the need for fathers in our challenging world today. Mr. Thomas was inspiring and at the same time did not pull any punches when it come to the difficulties our children face when fathers do not tale there responsibilities seriously. I not on recommend this book to all fathers , I purchased three dozen books to give away to fathers that need to read this book

After hearing the young man speak, I put his book on my "to read" list. It wasn't much different from what I expected - Thomas talking about his love of being a father, his love for his children, the things fathers need to do, the things his father didn't do. I was mostly curious about what the men he solicited to contribute to his book had to say about fatherhood. Their offerings added so much more to what would have otherwise been just another ordinary book.
