Follow Sasha through the totalitarian torments of the Stalin era, as he is bounced from bizarre, sometimes cruel treatment to isolation, depression, loneliness. His struggle to survive and maintain self respect is sharply contrasted against his tormentor, the monolithic State.
The worth of the individual is weighed against the Gulag. Why read about the Stalinist era today? Totalitarian systems across the political and religious spectrum have many common features. So the efforts of some governments today to control dissent continues. Well written, smoothly paced, this is the best of the Arbat trilogy. I DO recommend reading all 3, if you can find time for a Tolstoyean 1500 page epic.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. One would want to have read Children of The Arbat first as it is a continuation of the story begun there. There's much to learn for those interested in Stalin's purge of the Soviet Communist Party during the 1930's when he had the vast majority of the older Party members who had made the Revolution in 1917 murdered. And, it is very well written.

I am not an academic, so I don't pretend to any erudition beyond that of a person who loves to read literature and history. This book is the second volume of a trilogy, and I have not yet read the final installment. This is a wonderful portrayal of the terror of Soviet communism in the 1930's, and this second volume concerns the late 30's of "high Stalinism". It has a lot of characters, but the main characters are certainly gripping when one considers that this kind of terror actually happened to the Russian people. If it hadn't actually happened, it would seem too fantastic to be believable. The most interesting feature of the series is the attempt to portray the mindset of Stalin( basically paranoid narcissism) as he justifies to himself and others the slaughter of his own people. This kind of series unfortunately could be particularly interesting reading to potential and actual despots- - a "training manual of sorts". If you don't have any interest in the actual historical figures like Bukharin, Kirov, and Trotsky who were sacrificed "for the good of the Party and State", then this very long trilogy would probably seem torturous( no pun intended- - this is serious subject matter indeed). If 1845 pages of total text in the trilogy doesn't seem daunting to you but rather an opportunity to experience in depth the full horror of this period, then this will be a great read for you. Rybakov writes in the great sweeping tradition of Russian novelists like Tolstoy, Pasternak, and Dostoyevsky. This project was obviously a major undertaking for the author, and his writing burns with intensity, indignation, and at times sarcasm about a system that tragically trapped 175 million people. To me the whole panorama is riveting, particularly because, like his famous Russian author compatriots, he tries( and is largely successful) to portray the underlying psychological effects and states of mind as the characters go through this hell. I found myself caring a great deal not only for his major characters, but also for the myriad tragic actual historical figures actually murdered or in other ways maimed by Stalin in the 30's and 40's. Since he largely set up the system of oppression that victimized the Soviet Union since the late 20's and provided the template for current tinpot despots the world over, this couldn't be more relevant reading. Again, I haven't yet completed the whole trilogy, but I am finding it compelling reading, and I highly recommend it as a serious read for people interested in psychologically probing literature and history. Certainly it has a lot more heft than most writers who write "historical fiction" like James Mitchener. I have only read shorter Solzhenitsyn, but he has the same feel( and writes about the same material), so if you like that, this trilogy will be made-to-order. I am hoping Rybakov can conclude the trilogy as strongly as he has started, but I am now 1400 pages into the series, and if anything it gets more gripping as it goes. I don't understand why this series isn't a lot more famous than it is, although most people may find it heavy for their tastes. If you are not frightened by that, get it.

You get a very clear view of how a host of people faced Stalin's purges at all levels of society. Required reading for the generation that has grown up since the collapse of the Soviet system.

As second book in the 'Children of the Arbat' trilogy, this book explores the effects of the repressive apparatus as it collides with the central characters. The book keeps its momentum following Sasha's liberty and attempts at a new life. Yuri Sharok, now a higher level NKVD operative acts as a device for exposing some of the secret Polices inner workings. The moral effects from the pressure by this climate of fear are well illustrated with Vadim Marasevich who denounces a lifelong family friend for a Politically motivated joke, and then suffers the moral consequences. Moreso than in the previous book, there is a more intense analysis of Stalin, who is referred to mainly as 'he' in italics. This seems to lend him an omniscience, and his persona and vengeful disposition at times become very apparent.
Zinoviev and Kamenev's destruction is fascinatingly explored via the sham trials, as are a host of other doomed characters including Tukhachevsky, Yagoda and a host of others.
The all pervasive effects of fear are exceptionally well rendered, with Vadim and Sasha and Varya in particular contrasting the different ways of coping and surviving in a persecutory and merciless environment that society has become.
This is a superb book, terrifying. It gives in many respects the best insight into the experience
of living in the most turbulent time of Russias history than any other novel. It also shows more importantly, that one can survive, and retain ones humanity, when all others around are losing theirs, despite the horrors. In the end it is a book of hope.
