BY WAY OF EXPLANATION: NEW YORK CITY WAS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS 'FEAR CITY' IN THE EARLY 1980S. At that time, illegal prostitution, protection rackets and drug trafficking thrived in the city which was notorious for it's high crime and violence rates - for international power metal band Them the perfect setting for the continuation of their trilogy surrounding main protagonist KK Fossor. What was set in the 19th century on their first three album releases, 'Sweet Hollow' (2016), 'Manor Of The Se7en Gables' (2018) and 'Return To Hemmersmoor' (2020), is continued on 'Fear City', albeit with a 120-year time shift and the descendants of the original characters. "In a nutshell: KK Fossor is trying to find the descendant of the Witchhunter, who works as a televangelist under the name of Peter Thompson in 1981 New York," explains Markus Ullrich, the band's German guitarist and creative mastermind. 'Fear City' will be released on Steamhammer/SPV on 28 October 2022, preceded by two lead singles: 19 August 2022 will see the arrival of 'Welcome To Fear City', supported by an amazing video clip. 'Retro 54' is set to follow six weeks later on 30 September 2022. The third single, 'Graffiti Park', will probably be released simultaneously with the album or immediately afterwards. Both numbers will also be supported by video clips.

    Mit der 4. CD „Fear City“ schlägt die deutsch/amerikanische Metal Band Them ein neues Kapitel in der Geschichte um KK Fossor auf. Wie immer perfekt produziert und technisch auf höchstem Niveau musiziert gibt es eine um 120 Jahre in die Zukunft gebrachte Horrorstory (dank der eingestreuten Intros „Excito“, Outros „In the 11th Hour (klasse Gitarrenarbeit, doomige Ausrichtung), kurze Zwischenstücke oder auch gesprochenen Passagen usw. mutet es fast wie ein Hörspiel an), die gesanglich eine starke Veränderung mit sich bringt. Wo früher das King Diamond Falsett vorherrschte, regiert jetzt die eher normale Stimmlage und es gibt nur noch einige wenige Passagen mit extrem hoher Stimmlage. Musikalisch bewegen wir uns auf der neuen Scheibe im Bereich des Double Bass Drums angetriebenen klassischen Heavy Metal wie ihn Helloween oder Gamma Ray („Flight of the Concorde“), speedigen Power Metal wie ihn Blind Guardian zelebrieren ( „Welcome to Fear City“) oder eher überraschendem fast schon AOR bzw. melodischem Death Metal mit Klargesang wie ihn aktuelle Soilwork bzw. das Nebenprojekt TNFO anbieten („Retro 54“ mit tollen 80er Vibes und „Graffiti Park“). Der „King“ selbst schimmert dann bei „191st Street“ durch bevor die Band mit „The Crossing of Hellgate Bridge“ dann gar im Progressive Metal wildern (auch dank der eingestreuten akustischen und ruhigen Parts) wie ihn Nevermore zur Perfektion gespielt haben. Auch hier erinnern die Vocals wieder an King Diamond aber auch an den leider viel zu früh verstorbenen Warrel Dane. Die beiden härtesten Songs hat man sich dann für den Schluss aufgehoben. „Death on Downtown Metro“ klingt wie ein Hybrid aus Agnostic Front und Slayer und Death Metal artigen Blastbeats während „The Deconsecrated House of Sin“ purer Thrash Metal ala Exodus ist mit einem Black Metal Riff Intro, der hier eher auf die falsche Fährte lockt. Man sieht es ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei. Die Keyboards untermalen die jeweiligen Songs immer schön passend, die Gitarrensoli sind spannend und in die Lieder perfekt eingewoben und die teilweise sehr eingängigen Chorusgesängen ein Fest für die Ohren. Von meiner Seite gibt es hier dann knappe 4 Sterne (nicht mehr da das Album leider etwas kurz geraten ist) und der Verweis auf YouTube wo es einige Songs als Videos zu bestaunen gibt. Fazit: Es darf gerne eine Fortsetzung der Story geben. Ich bin dann wieder mit dabei.
