This is the most ambitious and comprehensive book on the subject of healthy eating for family members from infant to adult that I have ever seen, other than text books focused specifically on nutrition. It is focused mostly on infant through teenagers, but does address healthy eating for adults as well, including having a "healthy eating plan" as opposed to going on a "diet." As a physician with a strong educational background in nutrition, in addition to being the mother of four children ages 17 through early 20's, I was interested to see what this book has to offer. One of my children has been a vegetarian since age 7, so I was hoping this issue would be addressed. My four children are not what I would call "picky" and generally make fairly healthy food choices. However, I have been dismayed over the eating habits I have seen in the children of friends and relatives, and these issues definitely impact my family. I have wondered how the terribly "picky" eaters might have gotten that way, and if there is anything that can be done at this point. I would also like to know more so that I can help with my future grandchildren.
I can say that this book discusses just about every aspect that can be thought of concerning what kind of food, how much food, and how to offer food to children to improve the likelihood that the children will have good nutrition and learn to make mostly healthy food choices in their futures. It is definitely a good reference book to have on the cookbook shelf and from my own knowledge and experience, I do believe that the techniques are sound.

I am a dietitian specializing in pediatric nutrition and I have been looking for a book like this one for a while. I have been following the work of the authors who are both well recognized in pediatric nutrition field and could not wait for the book to appear on bookshelves. And I definitely was not disappointed! It is so helpful to see all the recent research I have been relying in my work in one place. The book is so well researched and practical that I am sure it will become a go-to-resource for many families. I especially like the comprehensive approach the authors use when talking about kids nutrition. I found from my own experience that the information on What to feed our kids is often easier to find both on the internet and in books. But what is often missing from many resources are the "why' and "how" aspects of feeding. In other words, parents are aware of nutritional guidelines but need help with evidence based guidelines on how to get their kids to eat nutritious food based on understanding why they behave in certain ways around the table. I keep recommending it to my colleagues, interns and all parents I know. Another thing I love about this book is how practical it is, with numerous case studies, Fearless Tips and super easy basic recipes helping parents put all the recommendations to practice immediately.

There was some helpful information in this book, but given what was in it, it didn't need to be anywhere near this long. Lots of charts and such that took up a lot of room but weren't particularly helpful. Wordy, etc. Then the contradicting advice that basically says we shouldn't make any food sound "bad" but we need to restrict the "fun food" (desserts, "junk" food, etc), because it's... bad.

If you're interested in "fearless feeding," I'd recommend checking out the Feeding Doctor online instead.

I do not have kids of my own, but I work in school food service and have nieces and nephews, so I have seen my fair share of picky eaters and high schoolers making bad choices. This book covers every age group, from infancy to high school. It has real-life examples of nutrition challenges: picky eaters, overeaters, carb-lovers, fast-food addicts; and how they intervened and corrected the issues. There are tons of facts and tips (even some recipes) to teach kids how to make better choices. One of my favorites is the "fruit test", when a child claims to be hungry between meals, ask if they want and apple. Because if they are really that hungry, they will eat anything, not just the chips they are "starving" for. The tables and appendices are loaded with information, that could even apply to adults: meal plans, lists of the best sources of nutrients, how to pick good produce, and additional resources, such as books and websites. This is a great source of information and should be a must-read for parents, the earlier they start teaching kids about fearless eating is easier than trying to correct it as a teen or adult.

I give this as a gift when I attend baby showers! Throw it together with a few eating-related items off the registry and i always hear positive comments when the new mothers start feeding their babies. As a dietitian, I enjoy reading from these authors and value their approach in this book.

I ordered this book the day it was published and couldn't wait to get it in the mail. I have already read it front to back and covered the pages with underlines, highlights, stars, and notes.
I do not have children but work with children {as a dietitian} and have toddler niece & nephews.
If you have children, even if they are perfect eaters, you need this book! and If you work with kids you need this book!
I love how it is separated into sections based on age. Really practical advice is given, and it does a great job at helping parents see how to better feed their child {based on their age, development, and temperament} without stress and guilt. It is not condescending but doesn't assume that you know everything about nutrition. They make it simple but straight-forward and give you tons of tips and resources on how to make feeding your child less of a chore.
I really can't recommend this book enough!!
