Fearless Leadership: High-Performance Lessons from the Flight Deck
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
An F-14 fighter pilot's top lessons for leading fearlessly - and bringing a team to peak performance
As an aviation pioneer, Carey D. Lohrenz learned what fearless leadership means in some of the most demanding and extreme environments imaginable: the cockpit of an F-14 and the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Here, her teams had to perform at their peak - or lives were on the line. Faltering leadership was simply unacceptable. Through these experiences, Lohrenz identified a fundamental truth: high-performing teams require fearless leaders.
Since leaving the Navy, she's translated that lesson into a new field, helping top business leaders, from Fortune 500 executives to middle managers, supercharge performance in today's competitive business environments. In Fearless Leadership, Lohrenz walks you through the three fundamentals of real fearlessness - courage, tenacity, and integrity - and then reveals fearless leadership in action, offering advice on how to set a bold vision, bring the team together (as wingmen, not Top Gun mavericks), execute effectively, and stay resilient through hard times.
Whether you're stepping into your first leadership role or looking to get out of a longstanding rut, Fearless Leadership will act like your afterburner - rocketing you to ever-higher levels of performance.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2015Very well written. Carey Lohrenz covers the waterfront of personal and organizational leadership issues as she wove in the story of her journey as a Navy fighter pilot with her observations of the leadership styles she encountered, all of which have applicability to any human organization. Her message centers on integrity, perseverance, and open communication, the need to honestly assess performance and learn from failure - and reinforce success. She also covers topical leadership issues she experienced in her post military business life. While comprehensive, I easily read this book on an airline flight, and recommend it to business professionals everywhere.
I was struck by her personal story toward the end of the book - a scared 25-year-old kid flying an F-14 off a deployed carrier at night, but also dealing with the tremendous and unwanted pressure and national attention of being "the first" that her scared 25-year-old peers did not have to contend with. An honest and poignant account that adds to the credibility of her message as she fought back - professionally and with courage - against an imposing bureaucracy that itself was in unchartered waters. Nice job.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022Just finished "Fearless Leadership" by Carey Lohrenz.
The author's story is inspiring in itself, being the first female Navy F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot. The discipline to achieve and the resiliance to overcome obstacles she faced provide the backdrop to the business and leadership lessons she imparts.
She dives deep into the fundamental values of courage, tenacity, and integrity. The author offers guidance on how to set a bold vision, bring the team together, execute effectively, and stay resilient through hard times.
Her transparency and vulnerability add to the connection with her audience.
Lots of highlights and quotables. Definitely an inspiring book on leadership. Check it out

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Had the honor of meeting Carey at a professional conference in Denver. After reading her book, I realize that the words and the person are one and the same. Lessons earned through the crucible of an extraordinary life experience...but delivered and written with humor, humility, and no-nonsense mid-western candor. I have a soon-to-be-college-bound daughter, and will give this book to her. Because when you're given two choices and neither are palatable...want her to remember Carey's solution in finding a Third Way...

- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019This book is a must read if you are in a position of leadership, want to be or are looking to improve your leadership skills. The information is practical and can be implemented today! As a small business owner it really made me reflect on my own leadership style and areas I can improve. I finished this book with several pages of notes and ideas and find myself referring back to them often.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2015I enjoyed the book and the lessons it taught me. Much of it was not new, but it was packaged in such a way that I could store it in my brain and draw upon it as needed. It has already helped me as chairman of my condominium board, and as vice-chairman of my town's board of assessors. I appreciate Carey's background and find some similarities in my own. Having a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bryant University, and being a certified commercial pilot, and being a former U. S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2, allowed me to get a deeper appreciation of where Carey comes from. If one has a desire to fortify their management skills, this is the book for them.

Great message for all who aspire to leadership. This woman faced such fierce opposition and gender bias to achieve her goals. Great stuff, more power to those who are prepared to do the hard yards to achieve their goals. Sitting on your duff waiting for it to happen wont work. Read the book and learn the lessons

It’s hard to not love a leadership book in which the author becomes vulnerable. This is the best leadership book I’ve read in a long time. Equal parts breathtaking and personally challenging! Great takeaways right through it!
