In this sensitive and caring book Rob Luka discusses his passion `to see to it that the children I worked with had a positive experience during their medical procedures, no matter how afraid they initially appeared.' He has realized his passion and now sets out to assist others in dealing with children who are terrified with needles, suturing, or simply entering a doctor's office or hospital.
He divides his immensely readable book into chapters that address the following: Start with Yourself - understand your response when dealing with a frightened child, how you response, look at yourself in the mirror and see what your expression states and then realize the power of your authority; Apply the Law of Expectations - find you confidence in creating positive expectations `What the mind believes tends to be realized'; Use the Power of intention - practice intentional listening - children naturally sense and respond to loving attention; Create Instant Rapport - lessons on how to create a rapport with both children and adults; Use Proper Semantics - remember the poser of the word; Gain Cooperation with Your Initial Approach - learn how to create a positive association with your presence; Use the Energy of Fear to Your Advantage -redirect fear through distraction and use the energy of fear to your advantage; See the Phantom in Phobia - learn to see past the initial phobic fear; Use Nonverbal Communication - fun facial expressions, use touch to speak volumes; Use Your Intuition - embrace the mystery; Breathe in Tranquility; Enter the Innocence of Love and Spirit - children gravitate to an open, receptive heart; and more.
Luka's thoughtful ideas and teaching techniques are a godsend to healthcare workers who confront terrified children every day. Using his approaches not only calms the child but calms the caregiver as well. This is an impressive and important book - a true contribution to the practice of medicine. Grady Harp, August 14
