Before the Music Dies is an extraordinary documentary and cautionary overview about the state of the music business in America. Written by Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen (and directed by Shapter), each of whom lost loved ones who happened to be musicians, Before the Music Dies is a journey through a vital music scene in the U.S.-artistically speaking-that is no longer nurtured and supported commercially. Shapter and Rasmussen take a chapter-like approach to demonstrating how every phase of getting music from artists to consumers is under the control of conglomerates and bottom-line analysts primarily concerned with keeping investors happy. Thus, we see musicians with enormous potential eschewed by the handful of major record labels that are still around. Meanwhile-as Eric Clapton, interviewed for the film, puts it-entire teams of makeover people and technicians exist to turn tone-deaf but attractive women into pop stars. Also highlighted is the record industry's love-hate relationship with file-sharing and downloadable music stored on sundry listening devices, which threatens control over commercially-packaged content as well as the enormous profits reaped from highly-priced CDs. Several case studies-especially the story of singer-songwriter-bluesman Doyle Bramhall II and how he survived ill treatment by a major only to find success on the same independent label as Dave Matthews-is fascinating. Interviewees include Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, Matthews, Elvis Costello, and Erykah Badu. --Tom Keogh

This movie will take the blindfold off your eyes and show you how mainstream music has been hijacked by money-hungry music executives and record labels who sacrifice musical integrity for profit. Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis {great commentary from this man!}, Nancy Giles, Michael Penn, and other music industry insiders go on camera and TELL IT LIKE IT IS! Their commentary is both eye-opening and fantastic, explaining how modern music fans are only given access to contrived pop stars by radio programmers while REAL artists who stand for originality or true musicianship are shamefully rejected by major record labels today.
Never before has the music industry valued money over music to such a disturbing degree. Today's record companies are looking for pretty boys and prettier girls who appeal to the fickle 18-30 year old demographic---music fans who ignorantly believe that any artist not shoved down their throats by radio or TV is simply not worth listening to. Talent and real musical ability is now secondary to image and sex appeal. Talented artists looking to stand out from the cookie-cutter crowd with their own unique sound or style are not allowed on the radio any longer and go sadly unnoticed by mainstream listeners. Great music and the musicians who create it are tragically becoming a dying breed as a clueless music-buying public is never given access to it.
In what might be the most fascinating segment of the entire film, songwriter Steve Poltz makes up a silly pop song off the top of his head with his guitar which is then recorded by a tone deaf 17 year old fashion model. Using computerized vocal pitch correction, she is instantly transformed into the next "Britney Spears" as they make a sexy music video using her computer-enhanced vocals. Your jaw will drop when you see this and realize just how fake and contrived all those Britney and Bieber CD's really are. Parents, turn off American Idol for one night and show this priceless segment to your pop-loving teenagers at home! We also get the story of blues-rock musician Doyle Bramhall who was kicked off his record label for weak sales despite a level of talent and musicianship that earned the admiration of the legendary Eric Clapton. I personally would have loved a portion of the film to cover the whole American Idol phenomenon and other shows responsible for the current crop of pop and country clones, but the information covered here is more than enough to wake up anyone to the sad reality of music today.
The filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen deserve a big thank you from all of us for creating a hard-hitting film of truth that exposes the ugly corporate take over of the music industry. Both Shapter and Rasmussen lost siblings who were musicians and decided to make this movie as a dedication and tribute to their lost loved ones. This DVD should be required viewing in high school music classes everywhere. If you care about the future of American music, get your hands on this DVD today and play it for every young music fan you know.
credits. as a child of the 90s, i can still remember when i could turn
on the radio, flip through 7 stations, and hear about 7 completely
different songs being played. it was not a process to try and search
out "alternative" stations because as you moved from station to station
you could find something that sounded completely different than what
was playing on the station before it. this all stopped around 1997 when
i found that as i moved from station to station i could be guaranteed
to hear the same song in a short period of time. sadly, around 1997, i
abandoned listening to the radio all together and haven't gone back
since. the radio used to be a place to hear what was new and upcoming.
bands had a chance to develop on the radio and gain an audience; record
companies instilled faith in bands and nurtured them to develop. it is
these concepts that the movie focuses on. pop radio hasn't always been
something to hate if you're a music fan! artists like stevie wonder,
ray charles, dmb, pearl jam, THE BEATLES, aretha franklin, elvis,
gladys knight & the pips, eric Clapton, led zeppelin, and so on are all
spawns of pop radio! in this movie branford marsalis has some of the
best quotes I've ever heard regarding the music industry saying: "fans
of popular music today aren't music fans...they're pop culture fans.",
"stevie wonder and ray charles would not have had a shot
today...they're blind!", and has one regarding dmb saying that they
would not have made it either since they are different and have a
violin & saxophone in the band! though this movie sounds like it would
be quite depressing to the music fan viewing, it is actually quite
uplifting because it shows that well respected people in the business
are aware of the crap that is coming out. please check this out and
spread the word.
is a must see! You will be taken on a fascinating journey into the business aspects of music and just
how it has stiffled the art of making music. If you've ever wondered why you're really not interested
in much of today's sounds, this will be an eye opener! Throughout history our music has been our soul.
It's been the voice that's inspired change and defined generations. Those days seem to be gone and
our "soul" is now owned by the devil! The film offers insigtful perspectives from artists and how
they've had to endure the inevitable outcome of greed. Also, you'll see how the business has taken
on a "one size fits all mentality," as well as, "play by the rules, or don't get played," philosophy.
In a free country this is a horrifying glimpse of just how much money can control an entire industry on
a national level. It's astounding! The film exposes how our choices have been so limited and so
manipulated it's scary! Not to mention how some of our music of today is processed and manufactured
and not even created by artists. And see the dangerous outcome of how money controls the airwaves.
You're being programmed and you may not even realize! It's a subtle wake up call that's presented in a
very enthralling "fly on the wall" manner. Kudos to the film makers. Let's hope it can inspire change.
Perhaps XM Satellite Radio is the only safe alternative to renewing, our once sacred, freedom of choice
and artistic expression.
