"A republic, if you can keep it."

As he was leaving Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention, a lady asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin’s foreboding reply: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

We are now at risk of losing that precious gift.

Through an analysis of history, political philosophy, and a plethora of current events, A Federalist Manifesto builds upon the work of others to detail how the federal government became dysfunctional and what can be done to correct it.

Written by a social studies teacher with over 20 years in the classroom, retired U.S. Navy Commander Brian Lasher addresses the issues in ways that are appropriate for both sophisticated reader and student alike. It also includes access to a gaming simulation for those teachers interested in exploring news ways to present the Constitution in class.

Rather than calling on a new generation to remake the world, this book challenges Progressive ideology and lays out the case for why mending the republic with time-tested principles is a better way.

For those concerned about the future of our country, there is a peaceful way out of the abyss.

It’s called a Convention of States, and it’s high time we did something about it.

  • Do you want to better understand how the government works? (In theory, anyway!)
  • Want to learn more about the Constitutional challenges and potential solutions?
  • Teacher, want to engage your students in active learning about the Constitution? Get them to discuss and debate the ideas?

Brian Lasher here presents a masterful work which seeks to prove the thesis laid out in the title: How to Mend the Republic With a Convention of States. He does so by going through inefficiencies and shortcomings of federal government, brought about by a lack of delegation to state and local government. In broaching such topics as term limits, direct or state election of senators, religious liberty and a number of other issues, Lasher demonstrates his familiarity with historical, political, and legal issues from the foundations of the USA to the present day.

Lasher argues for a return to classical federalism, most often by presenting the ideals of renowned Enlightenment thinkers, such as Locke, Montesquieu, and Smith, and of course, the American Founding Fathers. As such, Lasher's work may be considered revolutionary in the original sense, not as tearing down the current system, but as a means of pivoting back to an older system.

One of the most striking aspects of Lasher's work is its accessibility. Lasher does not seek to appeal simply to an academic audience, one that is well-versed in Constitutional law and US History. The work is written to be understandable and applicable to everyone from high school students to people with a great deal of experience on the topic.

I found Lasher's work to have very few shortcomings, apart from a small number of stylistic/grammatical inaccuracies. Additionally, Lasher did not address those who might like to go farther than federalism by introducing a anarchical or anarcho-capitalistic state, thus eliminating a constitution entirely. Apart from these slight issues, however, Lasher's work has very few holes in argumentation or structure.

The book lived up to everything I had come to expect after three years of instruction under Brian Lasher. It stands overall as a clear, informative, enjoyable work that will hopefully come to be required reading in school across the nation.

Brian Lasher is an amazing man. I had him my junior year of highschool for AP Unites States history. He is very knowledgeable and very interested in these sorts of things. He has been talking about this book since I met him junior year, possibly even before that. I am excited that it is finally here and am very happy for him to finally finish it. Congratulations Mr.Lasher. I haven’t read it yet but I’m sure it is going to be an amazing book!!!

Mr. Lasher presents a very thorough understanding of not only what the Framers of our Constitution wanted and meant, but of how such misinterpretations have impacted us through time until today. I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the field of politics, or if you want a better understanding of our political climate. Each chapter doesn't fail to have the same passion as the last, as Mr. Lasher explores a variety of highly debated topics, but leaves room for others to have debate and come up with their own solutions. I will without a doubt reread this as the love and care that went into this book shows and I will carry it with me in my library for as long as I can
