Richard is a loyal family man who is married to his childhood sweetheart. He has children. He's got a good job. One day he simply walks away. He's on an outing with his family, turns a corner and disappears. His family never sees him again.
In a bizarre storyline that seems like something out of a futuristic science fiction novel, Richard is compelled to change his name, fly to Ireland, and find a wealthy aristocratic family.
Once there, Richard becomes involved in this strange medical experiment that involves radically changing human behavior. At this point, I thought of SHUTTER ISLAND. Richard still maintains his basic core values. He returns to the States where he continues to live an alternate life only to discover that his identity isn't secret and the key components of the medical experiment are in the hands of a madman. It's up to Richard to stop this destruction before it destroys humankind. The novel ends where the second one begins.
I'm an avid fan of mystery and suspense novels. This novel is a great weaving together of those genres. The writing is intelligent and clever. The author creates interesting characters and an excellent storyline, which kept me wanting to read. This book took me only three days to read.
It is the first in a trilogy, but it reads as a stand alone novel. I also thought about THE HAPPENING as I was finishing the novel.
Easy to read, but it's not a romantic novel
Suspenseful with a lot of unexpected and unpredictable twists - almost as a thriller
Explores human mind as a wide spectrum between normal and abnormal
Intertwined with humoristic and comic episodes that make you laugh to tears
Later in the story getting lost between too many details, events and characters and stumbling to go forward and follow the main thread
Missing details about main character's emotions regarding his past - is it just like closing doors and never opening them again?
Looking forward for the sequel!
I don't want to spoil things for you, but suffice it to say as we re-enter the world of Richard Keiffer things get very interesting and the pace really picks up. The reason I so enjoyed this book is that it seems to follow the pace of the changing world. This is a time when we are being forced to re-evaluate our positions on the world. Richard's drift turns out to be not so inconceivable after all. How many people are true to themselves, and how many are just going through the motions? Richard's final actions mirror those that I would have taken, as his concerns are ultimately for the health of humanity. Guy Orgambide presents an intriguing view of one man's path through a changing world.
