Review

"A must read right now, as tensions unbelievably continue to escalate between the US and China." - Jason Kelly, Bloomberg"More chilling and cynical is a point Fenton makes a little later: "Even worse, the price of crossing the culture gap in the wrong direction can be catastrophic..." - Washington Post"The book is a whirlwind autobiography in the mold of "The Education of Henry Adams," one in which a life's events provide an opportunity to reckon with a world that is changing rapidly if not necessarily for the better." - Ryan McDonald, Easy Reader News"Fantastic read... Seriously, read this!" - Clay Travis, OUTKICK the Coverage / Fox Sports"Interesting thing about Chris's book is his ability to give us a peak inside the (Chinese censorship) system. To Chris's credit, it's obvious he grapples with what that means, given the power granted (by Hollywood) to the censors." - James Tager, PEN America "The book makes for a damn fine page-turning read." - Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool News"Thank heavens you wrote this book. This is a book that should've been out a long time ago." - Tucker Carlson, Tucker Carlson Tonight"If you are interested in Hollywood and China and all the big $$$, read "Feeding the Dragon"." - Greta Van Susteren "Have to say that it is entertaining, informative, and eye-opening. Highly recommend!" - Anthony Pompliano, The Pomp Podcast"You should read Chris Fenton's "Feeding the Dragon." Fenton is more sympathetic to the Chinese than I am, but he had a first-person view on how the CCP works and how they influence Hollywood films." - Sonny Bunch, The Bulwark""Feeding the Dragon" is riveting. Fenton is a great storyteller who also has great stories to tell. Part memoir, part policy prescription." - Emily Jashinsky, The Federalist"A fascinating and great read." - Congressman Mike Gallagher"This book is going to be a blockbuster. I guarantee you." - War Room Pandemic"As studios clamor to squeeze every red cent from a film, the process has created a Hollywood culture of self-censoring best described in the new book "Feeding the Dragon" by Hollywood producer Chris Fenton." - The Washington Times"Fenton's book is a personal look at events from 2000 to 2014, a critical period for Beijing's growing leverage over Hollywood studios." - Mark Magnier, South China Morning Post"Chris was a fantastic guest, and he didn't even cover a fraction of the stories in his great new book. Get yourself a copy!" - China Unscripted / China Uncensored Show"Fenton knows the topic better than anyone... the precarious relationship between Hollywood and China." - Neal Pollack, Book & Film Globe"Paced like a thriller, with comparable doses of international intrigue and conflict, Chris Fenton's bracingly candid business memoir Feeding the Dragon takes readers deep behind the scenes of Hollywood's shaky foothold in China. Dealing at the highest levels with Chinese government officials and major American brands like Disney, Marvel, and the NBA, the former Olive Garden waiter-turned-entertainment-industry-power-broker disarmed and defied authorities on both sides of the superpower divide to make billions--and history." - Jamie Bryan, Fast Company

From the Author

Self-reflection is an extremely powerful force. When I started writing, I felt passionate as a voice of dissent. By the end, I learned I was also complicit. Though my thoughts have altered, my mission has remained steady: we either continue to coexist through the bond formed by the exchange of culture and commerce, or we consciously start a cold war between the world's two superpowers.

A good MUST read if you ever plan to do business with the Chinese.

A good MUST read if you ever plan to do business with the Chinese.
Thru this reading, it gave me an opportunity to get to know you, Chris, as a person, a husband, a father, a son. You are very lucky to have your rolodex card writing habit, a wonderful/supporting/understanding wife, and two wonderful children. And J.C. as your friend, love the Duran Duran story and JC helped to re-energized you from being passive to becoming proactive during the SEC investigation. Your working with China is one heck of an experience, a lot of learnings and I am sure you have some lessons to learn also. But most importantly, you mentioned it, the assistant at WM said you didn't have "it" in you to be one of those agents. (Quite honestly, you are fortunate to NOT have "it" in you, consider yourself lucky to have a wonderful/supportive spouse and wonderful children by you. That's truly a blessing). (Before I opened the book, I was NOT sure what I should expect.). My feelings were very mixed. As I walked through your experience, there are many moments, I shockingly can identify myself wit. While reading your book, by turning each page, it is like a deck of flashcards fly through my head, all my previous China related projects came all over again. Honestly, I really suggest anyone who remotely has any interests in doing any kind of China business, should read this book. It is quite an accomplishment for you to achieve what you were asked to do. It takes someone with determination, optimistic, strong character, strong mental and physical ability to do what you have done. I second everything you are saying. Most importantly, I quite enjoy the last two chapters 37 + 38. Stay recent and stay relevant. On a different note, you are diplomatic enough to not go into the "dirty" bits of the China money loop. Although by revealing these, you might get some eyeballs, but they are better left for other outlets.

I am a big reader of any book relating to the entertainment industry, and I find in general they can be either too "inside baseball" or too vague, with precious few books hitting the sweet spot of being engaging for a wide audience as well as insightful to industry professionals. "Feeding the Dragon" is one that hits this sweet spot, which is all the more impressive because much of the book is devoted to exploring China/US relations and the specifics of Co-Productions and the dealmaking process. As such, the book could have been mired in details and business dealings, but Chris brings a fun, fresh and human perspective to the story that makes for a compelling and taut read.

As someone unfamiliar with the Chinese market and co-productions, this book made those dealings easy to understand and, even better, highlights the need for a commercial and cultural exchange between the US and China. The aspirational, emotional perspective Chris brings to the story is definitely something that will stick with me, even more so than the story of him going to see Duran Duran in his pajamas. Well, maybe not more so, but just as much.

    Highly recommend!

I generally read non-fiction books and to my pleasant surprise and enjoyment, "Feeding the Dragon," was a fast-paced, educational story that read like fiction. Not only did I come away with some great business-related nuggets that I will apply to my own business, I also came away with a better understanding of how fragile the relationship between China and the U.S. really is. The author was transparent with his own personal struggle as he pressured American companies to kowtow to stringent Chinese rules but he was convinced that the greater benefit - creating common cultural and commercial ground for opposing nations via the film industry - would make the world a better place.  Sure, Fenton profited from his hard work (isn't that the American dream, after all?) and significant sacrifices, but he also used his talent to foster good relations between two very different countries. Ultimately it was a refreshing story about how good values, laser-focused vision, strong work ethic and trust-based relationships all materialized to help the good-guy win. And two nations benefitted (at least on a cultural level) as a result.  Highly recommended!

'Feeding the Dragon' has great insight into the Hollywood connection to China. This nonfiction book was written by a well-known Hollywood film producer (Chris Fenton), and he gives real life examples of the intricate details of Chinese involvement into mainstream American movies. If you are interested in the China funding and co-opting of American films, you owe it to yourself to read this book. The details of the book are excellent. By the way, this book provides background for a recent Epoch Times documentary named 'Hollywood Takeover', which I also recommend you see. If you are interested in finding out about Chinese communist propaganda and how it is being incorporated into American films, you need to read this book. As an American who loves our country, I found it frightening and disturbing. A must read.

Really enjoyed the book! Picked it up mid-August and tore through it in a few days. Just went back this past Sunday and re-read it again -- tore through it again in 1/2 a day (great va-ca read!). Entertaining and enlightening read into the early days of entertainment and Hollywood breaking into the Chinese market and building relationships. Fenton was a trailblazer seeing opportunity way ahead of most others and now coming full circle...seeing the double-edged sword and consequences of "success" in China. His insight and experience is truly unique and one-of-a-kind and has sparked a huge personal interest into learning more about the incredibly complex/interwoven US-China relationship and how the "Commerce" and "Culture" aspects could be the bridge to avoiding all out conflict.

Fenton refers to it as a memoir. But what struck me -- it’s not a memoir as much as it’s a Mission Statement about reflecting on his past experience that is fueling a passion going forward.

Thanks for the great read, Chris!

This was very well written, entertaining, and informative. Chris Fenton takes us through his journey of bringing the US and China to partner together on Iron Man 3. Also highlighted is how, in the big picture, international in-roads that are made through art can lead to a safer world and future for all.

We get a first person inside look of Hollywood and some great anecdotes from behind the scenes of the business as well as some of the colorful and interesting people Fenton encounters along the way. The book illustrates how it takes so many moving parts to get a movie to the big screen.

It was a very enjoyable read and engaging. I found myself devouring the chapters, wanting to know what happened next. You can feel Fenton's passion in the pages and that he truly cares for the best for all.

Anyone who is interested in a personal behind the scenes look at the workings of Hollywood at the highest levels, this is highly recommended.
