As an author, Fenton chronicled much of that work in FEEDING THE DRAGON: Inside the Trillion Dollar Dilemma Facing Hollywood, the NBA, & American Business.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI am a big reader of any book relating to the entertainment industry, and I find in general they can be either too "inside baseball" or too vague, with precious few books hitting the sweet spot of being engaging for a wide audience as well as insightful to industry professionals. "Feeding the Dragon" is one that hits this sweet spot, which is all the more impressive because much of the book is devoted to exploring China/US relations and the specifics of Co-Productions and the dealmaking process. As such, the book could have been mired in details and business dealings, but Chris brings a fun, fresh and human perspective to the story that makes for a compelling and taut read.
As someone unfamiliar with the Chinese market and co-productions, this book made those dealings easy to understand and, even better, highlights the need for a commercial and cultural exchange between the US and China. The aspirational, emotional perspective Chris brings to the story is definitely something that will stick with me, even more so than the story of him going to see Duran Duran in his pajamas. Well, maybe not more so, but just as much.
Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI generally read non-fiction books and to my pleasant surprise and enjoyment, "Feeding the Dragon," was a fast-paced, educational story that read like fiction. Not only did I come away with some great business-related nuggets that I will apply to my own business, I also came away with a better understanding of how fragile the relationship between China and the U.S. really is. The author was transparent with his own personal struggle as he pressured American companies to kowtow to stringent Chinese rules but he was convinced that the greater benefit - creating common cultural and commercial ground for opposing nations via the film industry - would make the world a better place. Sure, Fenton profited from his hard work (isn't that the American dream, after all?) and significant sacrifices, but he also used his talent to foster good relations between two very different countries. Ultimately it was a refreshing story about how good values, laser-focused vision, strong work ethic and trust-based relationships all materialized to help the good-guy win. And two nations benefitted (at least on a cultural level) as a result. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified Purchase'Feeding the Dragon' has great insight into the Hollywood connection to China. This nonfiction book was written by a well-known Hollywood film producer (Chris Fenton), and he gives real life examples of the intricate details of Chinese involvement into mainstream American movies. If you are interested in the China funding and co-opting of American films, you owe it to yourself to read this book. The details of the book are excellent. By the way, this book provides background for a recent Epoch Times documentary named 'Hollywood Takeover', which I also recommend you see. If you are interested in finding out about Chinese communist propaganda and how it is being incorporated into American films, you need to read this book. As an American who loves our country, I found it frightening and disturbing. A must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseReally enjoyed the book! Picked it up mid-August and tore through it in a few days. Just went back this past Sunday and re-read it again -- tore through it again in 1/2 a day (great va-ca read!). Entertaining and enlightening read into the early days of entertainment and Hollywood breaking into the Chinese market and building relationships. Fenton was a trailblazer seeing opportunity way ahead of most others and now coming full circle...seeing the double-edged sword and consequences of "success" in China. His insight and experience is truly unique and one-of-a-kind and has sparked a huge personal interest into learning more about the incredibly complex/interwoven US-China relationship and how the "Commerce" and "Culture" aspects could be the bridge to avoiding all out conflict.
Fenton refers to it as a memoir. But what struck me -- it’s not a memoir as much as it’s a Mission Statement about reflecting on his past experience that is fueling a passion going forward.
Thanks for the great read, Chris!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis was very well written, entertaining, and informative. Chris Fenton takes us through his journey of bringing the US and China to partner together on Iron Man 3. Also highlighted is how, in the big picture, international in-roads that are made through art can lead to a safer world and future for all.
We get a first person inside look of Hollywood and some great anecdotes from behind the scenes of the business as well as some of the colorful and interesting people Fenton encounters along the way. The book illustrates how it takes so many moving parts to get a movie to the big screen.
It was a very enjoyable read and engaging. I found myself devouring the chapters, wanting to know what happened next. You can feel Fenton's passion in the pages and that he truly cares for the best for all.
Anyone who is interested in a personal behind the scenes look at the workings of Hollywood at the highest levels, this is highly recommended.

Chris Fenton summarizes the challenges of China/USA business very well in "Fenton's Five Forces". It was something new to me and a great learning experience.
1. Politics
2. National Security
3. Human Rights
4. Culture
5. Commerce
...with the focus being on the last two...Culture and Commerce, how they are intertwined, and why they are relevant.
A must read if any of these are of importance to you: global politics, the movie industry, culture, or global commerce.
