There are a few cons though. The biggest issue for me is that the display suffers from noticeable banding. I'm not sure what the bit depth of the display is, but if you're using any lens with a shallow depth of field, you'll absolutely notice banding in all out of focus areas. Banding is also quite noticeable on solid colored surfaces. The aspect ratio setting is also always reset to 16:9 after the 1:1 pixel mode is used. This is not a problem for my GH2 since it actually outputs 16:9, however for my bmpcc, I need to cycle through the options and switch it back into the "just scan" mode, a minor annoyance. There is also a 5 second splash screen that reads "Field Monitor" every time it is turned on, delaying its use. Finally, focus peaking does work, however it's not particularly effective, and it would probably be easier to simply focus by eye since the monitor is very sharp.
I find it comical that there is a USB port for firmware updates as there is no way that a firmware update will ever be released. There isn't even a website for feelworld, let alone any sort of support or firmware.
It is a great field monitor with High Resolution that allows you to frame and focus easily.
I wasn't sure if it was going to be good buy due to its low price (compared to other options)... BUT IT IS!
It is not a heavy-duty item. If you take care, it will last. If you let it drop on the street or kick it, then it may break.
. Great price point (Best value for the price I found)
. High Resolution, and Screen with Great Viewing Angle
. Menu with many options (Including: Zoom adjustment, Scanning type, Flip, Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, etc)
. IT DOES NOT "BLINK" or BLACK OUT for a moment AT ALL when Start / Stop Recording on the Canon 5D Mark 3 and Canon 70D (those are the cameras I tested on it). Since I don't have the 5D2, I cannot tell on it.
. It has PEAKING feature (red dots on edge of objects in focus). Not always accurate when using wide angle lenses, but that happens with other monitors as well.
. It has multiple Zoom options, P2P (pixel to pixel) viewing option
. It has Cross Mark option and some crop marks options too
. You can program 4 buttons at the front for specific functions (Peaking, Scanning mode, Display mode, etc. - Not every function is available to be set to these buttons though)
. Multiple Zooming & Display modes options to choose from (some will crop the image a bit, while others will show you all the camera information)
. Very light weight, slim form factor, and a good Sony battery can keep it working for long time
. There's also an optional Battery Plate that you can attach replacing the original, to use LP-E6 Batteries (but big Sony ones will work for longer periods of time) This is the Battery Plate: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EOGL7NA
. Includes a Hood that attach to a plastic frame that needs to also be attached to the monitor first
. Includes a hot-shoe mount. Some reviews tell it's filmsy, mine didn't seem the case. I have LOT of these kind of mounts from different sources, and the included one is just as fine. It won't support a brutal torque force (neither other ones), so if you use it correctly it will work fine.
. Inludes some nice cleaning accessories
. Includes two cables: mini-HDMI to HDMI and micro-HDMI to HDMI
. It has speaker at rear, with volume control on the front
. It has EARPHONE output, and all the outputs you can see on the item description & pictures
. Comes in a retail box, very well packed
. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE
. It doesn't have Zebra (the only thing I miss in the "somewhat rare case" I use it to check exposure)
. You cannot "save" the zooming values you set for specific mode to keep them. You can set the Zoom values for some modes, and if you don't change the mode or use P2P function (for instance) then those Zoom values will remain, otherwise they will reset to default.
. Not heavy-duty (for this price who would expect that!) but durable if you use it with some care. It's not fragile, nor heavy-duty. It's plastic with a great screen resolution and viewing angle.
. Does not have HDMI OUT (not necesary for me since I use it as 2nd monitor)
- MAIN PURPOSES:
. I wouldn't use the monitor to check colors since that requires a VERY good calibration, which I'm not sure if it's possible in this unit (I didn't test it either)
. I use it for FRAMING, FOCUSING and all other operations related to the normal use of a monitor.
. Using for Exposure Control by "sight"? well... if you want, but as EVERY screen that has its BIG risks (not to mention that the environment light will make LOT of influence in your eyes). Even the camera screen has it. Better use the Histogram and the Exposure Metering instead!!
. I got more than I expected for this price. The screen is VERY SHARP, has a GREAT VIEWING ANGLE, so for Framing and Focusing it works great.
. As mentioned above, it does not "blink" when start / stop recording with tehe cameras I tested with, which is absolutely GREAT for me. It does "Blink" when toggling between Live View and Not Live View mode (Information Screen), but that happens with ALL monitors I tested too.
. It is a GREAT choice for the price. I was looking for something SHARP (not just 800x480 or so) to FRAME & FOCUS, and I'm glad I didn't buy some "branded" units with lower resolution and higher price.
I'm very glad with the purchase. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The hotshoe mount is of better quality than I expected. The HDMI cable lock is of lesser quality than I expected (can't seem to tighten it enough to keep the HDMI cable secure). The sunshade is in two parts (a plastic frame that clips on, and then a velcro cover that wraps around) and is sturdy and prevent light leaks, so I'm happy with it, though I wish it folded flat for easier portability. The included "free gift" is of little consequence, but who can't use another microfiber cloth, right?
One negative to mention is that the panel, despite being IPS, is only 6-bit (manufactured by Innolux). I noticed banding in gradients and the highlights/shadows don't look very good. I would not depend on this monitor for color reference, but as a framing guide for handheld work or for quick, non-critical reference, it is perfectly apt not to mention perfectly priced. You can tweak the colors some, but it is still inherently limited.
For the 6-bit and the disappointing HDMI lock, I took off a star. But overall this is a great buy. Having used the awful Aputure VS-1 before, I would buy this in a heartbeat over it. It also has its own focus peaking, safe margins (including 2.35:1 AR), image flip, and more. I do wish it had a battery life indicator, but that's not the end of the world either. Oh, and by default this thing passes audio to its integrated speaker and there appears to be no volume control anywhere physically or in the menu. Just press the < or > buttons to adjust volume.
Also. I should briefly mention that this seller (Emgreat) is awesome. They answered my questions about included accessories, and even sent me pictures to prove what came in the box (some sellers take out the battery plate or hotshoe mount). The package arrived on the first day of the projected delivery window, so very fast shipping from China.
Anyway, I'm glad I bought it as it was exactly what I was wanting -- a cheap, lightweight monitor to use as a framing reference on my shoulder rig with my GH4. If you're in the same boat, grab one too!
