Feisty and Feminine: A Rallying Cry for Conservative Women Kindle Edition
Tired of inauthentic prattle, CEO and president of Concerned Women for America Penny Young Nance is ready to change the way women today engage the culture. In her debut title, Feisty & Feminine, she takes an honest and transparent look at what it means to be a conservative Christian woman with thoughtful commentary on the real issues confronting American women.
“Conservative women have never fit neatly into stereotypes, especially conservative Christian women,” says Penny Young Nance. “We’re not the humorless, dim-witted ‘church ladies’ Saturday Night Live has made us out to be. Today’s conservative women are intelligent, well-educated, compassionate, accomplished, funny, and fearless—and it’s time for us to stand up and be heard. In fact, we have an opportunity like never before to offer words of redemption to a world gone mad.”
From Miley Cyrus to campus feminists, it’s clear that women are still searching for their voice in culture today. With Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016, there is even more of a need for a compelling, conservative, and credible female influence in the mix. Penny Nance is that woman. She is direct without being disrespectful, winsome but not shallow, and relevant while still holding to faith and conservative values.
Accepting the baton of leadership from their foremothers, today’s conservatives have emerged as intelligent, hard-working women of faith who not only deal with issues like life and marriage, but are also advocates for the free market, for rights of conscience, and for female victims of radical Islam. Passionate about their role in society, they refuse to turn a blind eye to the sexual exploitation of women or the hypocrisy surrounding women’s issues.
The time is right for this book—and for conservative women everywhere to be part of the conversation.

Review
Concerned Women for America has been a strong voice for biblical values for many years now. In this engaging new book, Penny Young Nance gives a rallying cry for women everywhere to make their voices heard and impact the world around them on the issues that matter most. (―Jim Daly, President, Focus on the Family)
I’ve known Penny Nance for twenty years, and I absolutely love her passion for Christ, her passion to advance freedom and opportunity for all Americans, and her passion to educate and empower a new generation of conservative women to help get America back on the right track. She’s a rare voice in Washington---courageous and classy. May her tribe increase! (―Joel C. Rosenberg, New York Times bestselling author, Implosion: Can America Recover from Its Economic and Spiritual Challenges in Time?)
Penny Nance is a fearless culture warrior who takes opponents apart and shreds their shallow left-wing nonsense for the drivel it is. And she does it with a smile that belies her toughness. Penny proves that a conservative woman can be intellectually and spiritually prepared for anyone or anything---anytime. You’ll love her book, Feisty and Feminine, and will realize why liberals don’t want to be on the stage with her. They don’t like losing! (―Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas, 1996–2007)
Penny Nance is one of today’s boldest and most outspoken conservative women of faith. In this book, Penny exposes who is really waging the “war on women,” and it’s not who you've been led to think it is. More feisty and informed women are exactly what our country needs. (―William J. Bennett, former secretary of education; host of the nationally syndicated talk show Morning in America)
Women are right to be concerned about the state of America and their families. Feminism has failed them. The good news is that women have a fearless champion in Penny Nance, who is proving every day that feisty and feminine is a winning combination! (―Marjorie Dannenfelser, President, Susan B. Anthony List)
This excellent book is for all women who want to stand up and be counted. Penny Nance has handled most of the controversial issues with dignity and honesty. As you read this thought-provoking book, you will find many ways to express your convictions as a Christian conservative woman. I heartily recommend this book for women who want to make a difference. (―Dr. Beverly LaHaye, Chairman, Concerned Women for America)
Women are right to be concerned about the state of America and their families. Feminism has failed them. The good news is that women have a fearless champion in Penny Nance, who is proving every day that feisty and feminine is a winning combination! (―Gary L. Bauer, President, American Values; Former Chief Domestic Policy Advisor to President Reagan)
Often the pages of a book will reflect the personality of its author. This one fits the bill---positive, straightforward, and dynamic. A real joy to read! (―Dr. Richard G. Lee, There’s Hope America; Editor, American Patriot’s Bible)
Feisty and Feminine is an inspiring look at how a woman can be a conservative Christian while still being a powerful advocate for the rights of women and all other people. It is easy to read and very informative. (―Benjamin S. Carson Sr., MD, Emeritus Professor of Neurosurgery, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins Medicine; President and CEO, American Business Collaborative, LLC)

Feminine and Feisty is the debut manifesto by the author in which she lays down not just the foundations of her politics but also a who’s who of comparable personalities who contribute to the Conservative cause. Across ten chapters and a little less and 200 pages, she reconciles her conservative politics to the Biblical character Ester, who through divine intervention saved her people by her relationship with the Persian King Ahasuerus. Largely composed of Conservative opinions of feminism, marriage, abortion, faith, democratic manipulation of women, terrorism and foreign policy, every chapter is punctuated by a call to women to get involved at whatever level is comfortable, a range that spans church involvement to political appointments. Now for those completely oblivious to American Conservatism, the author largely criticizes the more provocative aspects of feminism that aim to end the role of homemaker and becomes an apologist for the gender pay gap reasoning that women usually take shorter work schedules to accommodate their household responsibilities. Heterosexual families are the building block of societies but more so children as she condemns abortions and comparable methods of birth control. She points out the disservice of the American Democratic party that caters to women but more so a larger narrative of being ignorant of the plight of women around the world. That segues to into a larger discussion of American foreign policy in the middle east (or the lack thereof in Obama administration) as she justifies our support of Israel and the need for tougher policy in regard to ISIS. On the home front, she singles out business regulation as the greatest disservice to female entrepreneurs.
Of course, not sharing the same political views as the author I found some amusing if not contradictory statements. In a comparison that I see a lot amongst conservatives, on page 19 regarding stereotypes women, she compares June Cleaver with Beyonce disregarding the major difference that one of them is a fictional character. It will take some homework in my end, but Barbara Billingsley made the distinction that while people saw her character as a role model mother and homemaker, she herself would leave children with a babysitter while she worked at the studio. In a discussion about birth control and abortion in other countries, she mentions her support for barrier methods but suggests other inexpensive means like “simple tactics like beans in a jar to count days and monitor ovulation” – really? It gets better! After reading the chapter explaining the lies of gender pay gap, in the 9th chapter she discusses single mothers and poverty, she mentions that “when single mothers have a full-time, year-round job, the poverty rate for such families falls…”- that sounds like a terrible catch-22. In a discourse of American foreign policy in the Middle East, she completely cops out on the history of American intervention in the Middle East by declaring its “complicated” and yet still advocates for involvement.
There is more criticism I can dish out but it would just be nit-picking and none of it should detract from the inspirational and informative content this book contains for both the seasoned Conservative woman or anyone curious about principles of Conservatism. By carefully combining faith and politics, the like-minded will appreciate the background and noble motives of the CWA - I may not agree with them on several subjects but I understand better how the CWA can only influence it members, the future generations of members to come as they strive to be the counterbalance to the worst in left politics.
