I never knew clay litter, if it does, takes forever to break down. Can you imagine just how much of it is sitting in landfills along with everything else today? I recently adopted a 8 month old kitten. I am lucky she is very adaptable. I love using the pine pellets. I researched many constructive negative and positive reviews and watched several YouTube on this type and usage before deciding.
Imo, litter boxes need to be changed daily no matter which type of litter is used, especially if there is more than one cat. It is their area to relieve themselves and we owe it to them to set them up for success. (Think about what you want to see and smell when you open your bathroom door). I read someone's complaint about their cat tracking sawdust everywhere. I wonder how many days it had been before the box was cleaned! I spend about 5 minutes on maintenance every day, removing the wet and solid. The sifting litter box didn't work, the pellets fell through. I have a regular litter box, an enclosed litter box, a large narrow sifting scoop, (Amazon purchase), small garbage can, and biodegradable poopscoop bags. I haven't needed to dump or change the contents of the litter box as everything is sifted daily with my scoop and new added if needed. Maybe it's because I don't have a dog pad soaked with urine sitting in the bottom of the litter box?
I do think it's a waste of money to use the dog pads. I scoop and sift, returning the pellets to the pan, putting just the sawdust, no solids, daily into a small garbage can. That can be dumped every other day into a flower bed, around a tree, but NOT in any food garden. Otherwise dispose the same way as other litter. Do NOT FLUSH!
Most of the time, all I smell is pine. 🐈 .

My JaJa doesn't concentrate her urine. She drinks massive amounts of water and pees it all out. What works best for her is a double cat box of feline pine. I used to use Yesterday's News, but can't seem to find that any more. Feline Pine works just as well. I put 2 doggie pee pads at the bottom of each box (as well as some on the floor underneath--JaJa's a messy baby), then pour a generous amount of feline pine on top. It doesn't clump, which is perfect for my needs. Instead, the pine pellets disintegrate into sawdust where she pees. What I like best is that the pee continues to sink to the bottom, and the sawdust on top stays dry. It all collects into one big pee/pine cake at the bottom. Every week I flip the cat boxes over into the trash. The whole thing pops out cleanly thanks to the pads. Every other week I wash the cat boxes out. One 40 lb bag lasts me 2 weeks. I'm sure it would last a normal cat more than twice that long.This pic shows the boxes after 9 days of use. Time to dump them in the trash ;-)
