A Stonewall Honor Book * A Time Magazine Best YA Book of All Time
From Stonewall and Lambda Award–winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time.
Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after.
When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle....
But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.
Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve.
"Felix is attending an ultracompetitive arts summer program to have a better shot at a full scholarship to Brown when someone posts Felix’s dead name beside photos of him, pre-transition, in the school’s lobby. Felix’s plot to get revenge throws him onto the path of love and self-discovery." (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List")

When the gallery of photos showing Felix before he transitioned goes up, Felix is so sure he knows who did it, he embarks on a catfishing plan to that end up very differently from how Felix imagined it. The guy he’s catfishing turns out to be more complex and sympathetic than Felix gave him credit for. Felix gets into such a tangle of emotions and relationships that I couldn’t put the book down because I had to know how it was all going to sort itself out—how Felix was going to deal with the situation he largely caused for himself by seeking revenge in the first place.
Along the way he has to grapple with his identity—which I thought was such a good thing to have out there, that identity is sometimes hard to pin down, and there are debates about the usefulness of labels at all, but also how finding the right one can be affirming and liberating in its own ways. He also has to learn that seeking validation from people and institutions that don’t necessarily care about him won’t bring him the sense of worth he’s seeking, but that he has to value himself. He wants so desperately to love and be loved, but unless he loves himself, he’ll never be able to see and appreciate the love he’s being offered.
It’s an amazing story because just from that one event, Felix faces all of these things and more. I really like that one of the things Felix does is to seek out help within the LBGTQ+ community—even though he’s nervous and mostly an observer, it’s good he didn’t stay in his own head but sought outside himself for guidance.
Felix’s relationship with his dad was really complex, too. It was good to show that even when a person has support, it can be fraught with contradictions that are confusing and hurtful but also filled with love. I also adored Felix’s relationship with his best friend. Their connection was so unconditional—even when they are at odds for a while, you can feel the strength of their friendship.
This book has it all, Diverse representation, drama, love, coming of age. Definitely worth the read
It was a really good book, with amazing POC, trans and queer representation, i loved that even thought Felix thought he was sure of his gender, he still questioned it and found out more about himself, because that’s something a lot of us can relate to. I liked the different tropes, enemies to lovers, best friends to lovers, love corner, etc.
What i found disappointing was that there wasn’t much to build up Ezra and Felix’s relationship. At the beginning of the book i was like “yes! Es and Felix need to be together!” but then the whole thing with Declan happened and i just feel like the relationship with Declan had a much better build up. Tho i loved the ending and i love Ez and Felix
On a more personal note, I loved the letters written to Felix’s mother because they showed another layer of who he was, showing his pain and vulnerabilities, making me fall in love with his character. There’s a rawness to him that pulls on readers, and readers will find themselves rooting for him to find the love that he desires and deserves.
I absolutely loved the dynamic between Ezra and Felix. Their bond, love, and respect for each other are beautiful. One of my favorite parts of the story is when Ezra tells Felix that his worth is not based on his grades, test scores, college applications, or what others think about him. “...It only matters what you think. Do you think you’re worthy of respect and love?” This spoke volumes to me, and I think everyone needs a friend like Ezra. This was book was an outstanding read, and I wished it never ended.

It’s about love—finding love, being in love, loving oneself and loving others. It’s about identity—understanding and accepting and finding what feels right to you in your skin. It’s about acceptance and art and family and friendship. The story is told solely from Felix’s perspective and I think Callender captured the teenage character and experience so well through him. These characters were young and imperfect. They made stupid decisions and silly mistakes and they were so realistic in their complexities and flaws even though I admit that sometimes they frustrated me! Felix really grew on me as the story progressed but I also enjoyed reading about the side characters, although I will say that the side characters came across as mostly two-dimensional compared to Felix's very well-rounded one.
Maybe this makes me sound lame or whatever but I feel so privileged to follow Felix’s journey and to witness the hardships and painful rage-filled moments he experiences, but to also follow his journey to understanding and accepting himself and to finally finding and embracing the love he absolutely deserves. Oof, honestly, just thinking about what he goes through, the terrible things people can say and do to others, makes me so emotional and angry and weepy. This story made me hate people more (lol, kidding, sort of) but it was also healing and heartwarming and hopeful. It will surprise absolutely no one that this book made me cry.
This story encompasses so much that I feel like it would be impossible for me to try and include everything in a review. Honestly, I know my review would pale in comparison to the beauty that is Felix’s story and Callender’s writing so the best thing you can do for yourself is to read this gem.

It's a celebratory tale of self discovery, self acceptance, romance and believing in yourself.
This book is a wonderful and, at times, difficult journey through the life of our sweet, shy, talented and also slightly dense MC Felix as he navigates modern day New York as a Black Trans Queer individual.
Felix goes through various avenues to accept himself throughout the book including; finding a trans support group, researching all the many points on the trans spectrum, dealing with prejudice from Feminists who believe he's a misogynist, trying to unravel his complicated feelings towards his parents and best friend, trying to get into art school, coming up with a misguided revenge plan for something that happened to him, not believing in himself or his skills, and also wanting love and romance whilst being Oblivious to what's RIGHT in front of him.
I liked how this book showed that even in modern New York (arguably one of the most liberal places there is) there are still prejudices and ignorance within the Queer Community. It also tries to show that you shouldn't be scared to ask for help, and that most of us don't have a clue and are just trying our best.
I also Adored the romance in this and the characters were just brilliant 😭😍💕
CW: The book deals with lots of heavy issues such as homophobia, transphobia, transphobia within the queer community, identity issues, abandonment, low self worth, pressuring people into having sex, consent and many more.
I'm sure people who have read this love it just as much as I do but if you haven't all I can say is it's worth the hype! 💗🤍💙

The story deals with the more difficult topics, like being deadnamed, online bullying and having old pre-transition pictures shared publicly, alongside a very sweet romance, self discovery and a whole lot of art. While the difficult topics were harrowing to read, it was expertly handled by a trans author, and Felix never being deadnamed by the author was much appreciated.
I love that Felix was a complex character, with many flaws. He's very messy when it comes to relationships, still finding himself and discovering what he wants in a relationship, and that was really sweet to watch. Honestly Felix is one of my favourite characters ever, I wanted to be his friend.

By far the the best book I have ever read, it is interesting, it's a roller coaster of emotions and I mean that with the deepest sincerity. This book made me laugh, cry, smile 'till my mouth hurt. Although I'm happy I've read the book I'm sad it's over, as I've grown such a passionate connection with the characters. The choices and decisions Felix had to make, the happiness and sadness showed within him made me love the book even more. Watching Felix grow and figure out who he is, what he plans on doing with his life, reading all that made me the most inspired I've ever been.
If you're thinking of buying or reading this book. DO IT. It was the best decision I made to buy it. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!
The most beautiful book I've ever read, so well written, so beautifully written, so in depth. 100/10 couldn't have been written any better. If you're struggling with your identity read it! It's so motivating, inspiring and comforting. AND the delivery - delivered on time, great packaging, not damaged in the slightest. 100% worth the money.
