Product Description
'Hearing the Attacca Quartet play is to experience a mix of high energy technical skill and musical intelligence. They are an ensemble devoted to their mission with a future of unlimited potential.' - John Adams
The internationally acclaimed Attacca Quartet has become one of America's premier young performing ensembles. Praised by Strad for possessing 'maturity beyond its members' years,' they made their professional debut in 2007 as part of the Artists International Winners Series in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.
Review
For its debut album, this young ensemble pays homage to one of America's greatest living composers, playing John Adams' complete repertoire for string quartet. In addition to the famously demanding String Quartet and John's Book of Alleged Dances, the Attacca Quartet also presents the first recording of Fellow Traveler, a tribute to Adams' long-time collaborator Peter Sellars. --WFMT, Lisa Flynn, April 2013
During much of the 1980s and '90s it was possible to think that only one string quartet in the world was devoted to expanding the genre's repertory. The Kronos Quartet then provided (and still provides) the impetus and vehicle for an explosive expansion of the canon though its aggressive approach to commissioning new works, including many from composers who had not previously worked in the form.
Today we live in a world not only enriched with music shaped by Kronos's omnivorous appetite but also well stocked with younger ensembles that have embraced the Kronos canon as part of a comprehensive repertory. The Attacca Quartet, currently the graduate quartet in residence at the Juilliard School, shows the benefits of this development on 'Fellow Traveler,' an exhilarating new CD devoted to the complete string quartet works of John Adams.
The disc opens with 'John's Book of Alleged Dances,' a 1994 set of vivacious, cheeky and stylistically wayward miniatures, some accompanied by a rhythm track derived from piano samples. You won't want to discard the Kronos recording, since Mr. Adams tailored his writing to the personalities and proclivities of its members. But the Attacca musicians rearrange the movements to their liking; their playing is exuberant, funky and, in instances like the eerily creeping 'Alligator Escalator,' more exactingly nuanced.
Attacca was the second group to embrace Mr. Adams's String Quartet (2008), and the first to play it at Lincoln Center. The work integrates the Minimalist chug of his early years into a broad, weighty span of styles and moods. It is a substantial statement, and the members treat it that way.
'Fellow Traveler,' Mr. Adams's affectionate, self-referential 2007 birthday gift for his longtime collaborator Peter Sellars, provides an ideal coda for this vivacious, compelling set. --The New York Times, Steve Smith, April 2013
...a terrific new album from the young musicians of the Attacca String Quartet...features all the string quartet music Adams has written so far. It includes John's Book of Alleged Dances, with its twisted hoedowns and funky habaneras and his more serious String Quartet from 2008. This eclectic piece shifts impressively from repeating figures and popcorn-like pizzicato (a nod to Adams' minimalist roots) to sweeping melodies that suddenly appear from nowhere. --NPR, Tom Huizenga, April 2013

Adams lives up to the hype. Thanks to my fellow amazon reviewers! The AQ is stellar. This recording is in high rotation for me now, and may remain there for a good long while.
Bravo! Brava! Belissima!
"John's Book of Alleged Dances" is a wonderful collection of made-up dances. And its a set that should be played with a sense of fun. How can you take movements named "Dogjam" or "Alligator Escalator" otherwise? Yet this is demanding music that only works when played with precision and energy. The Attica pulls it all together, and delivers a winning performance. I won't say this is the definitive performance, but it's pretty darned close.
Also included is Adams' 2008 String Quartet, and the title select, "Fellow Traveler." The latter is a birthday present to Adams' opera collaborator Peter Sellers, and receives its world premier with this release. Although a short work, its unaffected nature and spontaneity makes it an ideal encore piece -- a function it sort of serves in this release.
