The Fellows tray seemed very heavy. But when I compared it to the industry-standard trays we have at work, it was a bit lighter.
The 3M tray is lighter still, but also made solid.
I'd rate them both similar for quality metal and weight.
Points to both.
3M tray provided a paper template you can tape to the underside of your desk to ensure you line up your drilling holes correctly.
Fellows tray gives you a visual diagram to follow that requires you to be able to measure accurately. I'm not very handy, so keeping things straight was a concern. One consolation is there is sticker to hold the mounting bracket in place when you are ready to put the screws in.
For me the 3M won out as I kept the paper template mounted with the tray and in a few years if I remove it to put on a different desk I have everything I need to measure precisely. With the Fellows I'd lose the mounting sticker and who knows where the installation instructions will by that time.
Point to 3M
Fellows is 2-3 inches longer than the 3M. With my gaming keyboard (additional set of 18 keys on left side) the Fellows keyboard wins out for versatility. Also some folks may want more area to use the mouse and the 3M has less space to offer

Overall, this is a great product! It's adjustable yet sturdy, and is comfortable and suitable for multiple environments. This thing is just an awesome addition to my work space. It is large enough to accommodate my above average sized keyboard (Logitech G110) with room to mouse comfortably. It is fairly adjustable up and town, and can be tilted to encourage a more ergonomic wrist position.
It took me about an hour to fully install this unit. I think that it took me much longer than it should take an average semi-handy individual. My desk is entirely custom built, and required some modifications before it was Keyboard tray ready.
TOOLS REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION
Power Drill, Tape Measure, and an extra set of hands
PROS VS. CONS
- Affordable (considering the options/adjustments this has compared to the competition)
- Large (Great for wide keyboards, still has plenty of room to mouse on)
- Easy to install (Just make sure to center it and "Plan your work, then work your plan")
- Quality Customer Support (I had a question during assembly and called support. They helped me through the issue in a timely and respectful manor)
- Could be a bit longer (depth wise) as an ergonomic style curved keyboard may have some trouble fitting on this tray, front to back. I also am not able to use the included 'pads' or 'supports' that are shown under the mouse and keyboard. They seem very comfortable and to improve the erganomics of your hand position. However, even with a standard keyboard it is difficult to fit the pads on below your accessories.
- This tray is slightly touchy when it comes to moving it up and down.Read more ›
The tray itself is made of plastic, not metal like the higher end professional series either. I would not recommend this tray for anything but occasional use as it is not adjustable enough to correct of ergonomic problems.
There is nothing I disliked about the quality or performance of the tray and I would recommend it to anyone. There is one caveat that you should be aware of, however. Besides the obvious that you could not mount it to a glass-top desk, you should also be aware that many desks made today have a hollow core top (much like an interior door in your house). The mounting plate needs something very solid to screw in to (the tray is the heaviest I have ever seen). If your desktop is hollow core the screws would rip right out. You have a couple of options. One would be to install a wood mounting plate from the front of your desk to the rear which you would attach into the solid wood edges, or another option would be to use short Molly-type mounts for the rear screws of the keyboard mount.
The price (for the quality of this tray) is reasonable and it should serve its purpose for a long time to come.
