Editorial Reviews
Review
“The book demonstrates that young women often acted to a considerable degree on their own initiative to ensure the functioning of an extermination camp. . . . By elucidating the horrific ‘workaday routines’ of these female perpetrators in Majdanek and confronting the abysmal anthropological depths of a topic that is still taboo, the author helps to reconstruct how the murder of Europe’s Jews could become reality.”

Hardback wDustcover//405 pages- nonglare paper//114 pages of notes at the back//20 b/w phots and diagrams// Seemed a little repiticious, but I did learn a lot about the protocols and life of the female guards. It was quite different from the assumptions you make or hear of. I did find it informative. ...jim

Very in-depth review of the female auxiliary guards (Aufseherinnen) at the Majdanek concentration/extermination camp. Very important historical book. Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it.

Anthropology and history of the everyday are the main tools of this great book on SS Female Guards. Both a methodological lesson for young researchers and an insightful account of the Majdanek "perpetrators" without mythology or judgement.

Extremely well researched. Objective but not insensitive. The information regarding recruitment, training and attitudes is very well structured, expressed and explained. To improve your understanding, this is a useful book.
