F. Burn is a horror and erotic romance author based in London. She began writing songs and poetry in her youth, but after graduating with a degree in psychology, she developed an interest in writing tales which explored the dark side of the human psyche. Her controversial debut novel, Secret Love, has received excellent reviews. Her short story, The Sustitute, has also been included in new anthology, Dark Desire. When she is not writing, she enjoys reading dystopian horror novels, watching sci-fi horror movies, painting, going for long walks and cooking.

Short, mildly erotic romance

This was a pretty good story despite a few flaws. For one thing, it seemed a bit rushed, as if everything was happening just a little too fast. That may have been an intentional effort by the author to keep the story short - basically, this is a two-character play - but I felt like the story would have benefitted by adding a few characters and using them to slow down the pacing. Also, too much tell and not enough show - most of the story is exposition, with the narrator telling us what happened. I'd be willing to bet that dialogue is less than 15-20 percent of the book. It seemed much of what she told us could have been revealed in some clever dialogue. Still, I liked the story - the characters were pleasant enough and ended up happy with each other, as it should be. Anyway, all this is just my feelings about the story. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

Quick, fun short story

Firstly, not a fan of how large the font is.
Some very pointed and maybe even sexist language and opinions in this story, such as "he had interests that were very different from your average male" when referring to the MMC liking musicals and baking. Yet it's followed by the FMC admitting: "As I stepped outside beside my stunning androgynous god, I couldn’t help but feel pride. I was proud to know this person who had dared to be an individual." So I think it's actually the FMC growing (very quickly) and coming to love and accept the MMC as her partner, rather than as simply a man or a woman.
Would have loved more dialogue and more character interactions outside of the two main characters.
Overall, 3.5.

Didn't like the narrator

The writing is okay. The theme is a decent one, and the sex is okay. The main character seems a little too self-righteous, so I didn't care about her, making the story drag. Also, she seems take a rather sexist tone and also tries to justify it but telling and showing just how bad men are. Overall, I didn't enjoy this story.

Femme was an interesting read from start to finish, despite this not being the kind of book I would usually go for. This is an uplifting tale of being yourself and not being what society expects you to be. I enjoyed how the characters eventually opened up to one another, as well as the humorous elements. I would definitely recommend this short story to those who can keep an open mind.
