A Touch of GOR

I stumbled upon a reference to the anime DVD "Fencer of Minerva" on a web site devoted to John Norman's GOR novels - so, being a fan of same, I thought I'd check it out and found a copy on Amazon. It's a little hazy, but there are apparently 2 movies in this mini series - the one I found was the first part of the saga entitled "The Emergence". The DVD actually contains 3 different 'segments' of this story (a typical anime format) each being about 20 minutes long. While this is certainly not any kind of 'official' adaptation of Norman's GOR tales it does capture many of the elements of his novels, particularly the master/slave relationship between men and women that is such an integral aspect of the GOR mythos in Norman's trademark kinky blend of BDSM & Sci Fi. The characters in 'Fencer of Minerva' are not 'transplanted' to an alternate world/universe as in the GOR novels, but are 'residents' of the fictional planet Minerva - where a sort of medieval culture is in force with kings and barbarians, sword fighting , and strange creatures that the local denizens ride... again similar to the GOR precedent. The simple plot follows the lives of 2 children, a boy & a girl, who are the off-spring of the rulers of the world who become seperated by a political coup and are later re-united as adults and battle to regain their realm. From a 'sexist' point of view, the fact that the main female character ends up as a 'slave' girl 'fawning' after her 'master' would undoubtedly be off-putting to some, but (as other 'reviewers' have noted) this is all part of the homage to the GORean source material - so if one doesn't like this concept it's likely that the whole movie will be a turn-off. Personally I found it all pretty engaging on most levels - my main criticism would be with the quality of the animation, which is 'sparse' in a lot of instances - often just 'panning' still paintings as is the case in many low budget anime fliks. The movie is 'sexy' without being pornographic - lots of sex scenes and heaving breasts, but no penetration or genitals on display as in some X rated hentai offerings. All in all I found it pretty enjoyable, light weight fare - sure a heck of a lot closer to Norman's 'vision' than the two sad live action GOR movies released in the '80s - if you are a GOR fan you'll doubtless like the 'Fencer of Minerva'... if you've not yet encountered the GOR novels this might encourage you to check them out!

A mediaeval adventure tale, with sex scenes

This is a familiar topic. Indeed, a guy called Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a few such tales, back in the real Middle Ages. Much later, John Norman introduced us to Gor, a world where (almost) all the men are warriors, and (almost) all the women are sex slaves.

Welcome to Minerva, which, near enough, is Gor brought to the small screen. The anime is 5 episodes of 45 minutes each, so about the same length as a standard 9 or 10 episode series. It tells the story of childhood sweethearts Diana and Sho, one of whom later becomes a warrior and the other a sex slave. Good adventure, some complex political plotting, and a happy ending. But only one fencing scene, so the title is a bit misleading.

Minerva is a world of walled cities, low technology, merchants, nomads, clerics, warriors - a typical faux mediaeval ambience. People ride horses, but the horses have two legs. They shop at open markets, which seem to sell mostly vegetables and sex slaves, hardly a thriving mixed economy. But, overall, Minerva no Kenshi is a pretty good tale with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Well worth your time.

The sex scenes are quite soft - for instance, no male anatomy is shown. And, unlike Gor, the senior sex slaves get cosy with the junior sex slaves - this being, after all, Japanese hentai. However, these scenes can be skipped entirely without damage to the continuity of the story.

Gor-Lite, But Definitely Not Disney-Gor.

On the planet Minerva, in the mesa-top City-State of Doria, Diana is about to discover that wishes can come true in the worst way. Playing with Prince Sho as children, Sho asks if she will be his "servant". It is plain that a less reticent translation would be "slave". Diana denies this vehemently:"I'm going to be a princess!" These words turn to ashes in her mouth as her father Randis, leader of the palace guard, slays Good King Bassen and sends his minions to slay Sho. Sho falls to his presumed death, leaving Diana in mourning. Randis the Usurper is king of Doria, leaving Diana as Princess of Nothing.
Years later, after Diana turns 18, she sneaks out of the palace disguised as a man, fleeing a political marriage to Prince Dunan of Gupta, a major military power. After freeing virginal slave Fina (leaving a slave on sale before her, who seems to enjoy her lot) the two flee to the grasslands outside Doria. There both girls are captured and enslaved by Plains Nomads. Diana is spared a gang bang by all the men of the tribe when a mysterious stranger wins the approval of the Nomads, and Diana.
Learning that the stranger is her Sho, she makes a personal pledge of enslavement, offering herself to him "until I am no more." And so exiled Prince Sho and slave princess Diana begin a pacaresque journey together. But Prince Dunan is on her trail, and many perils and pitfalls await the master and slave lovers.
For Gor fans, "Fencer of Minerva" is similar enough to be quite enjoyable, with a few shortfalls. Minervan slave girls get away with emotional manipulations that would have Gorean kajirae (slave girls) sitting down gingerly for a week.
Still, the series is quite enjoyable. Diana's growth in servitude shows, episode by episode. And from completely within her slavery, Diana shows her skills in patching up distressed relationships and matchmaking.
Gor and Minerva are cult followings, tight niche markets. Still, it is an expanding and lucrative niche. Producer/creator Dr. Pochi is advised that creating more stories between FoM: Emergence and FoM: Tempest would find an eager audience. I wish this series, now and in future, well.
