Fit and finish are good. The Ebonol fingerboard is glossy. The fret lines are inlaid, and are thin. Electronics are perfectly adequate -- feel free to upgrade, though I'm not sure I'd spend a lot of money there as the factory pickups and components are just fine. Mine arrived with medium-low action and a moderate amount of neck relief: the standard Fender J-bass setup in every respect. I carefully removed the relief with just under a quarter-turn of the truss rod -- I like a dead flat fingerboard on a fretless, because I want all the "mwah" I can get. A few tiny tweaks on the truss rod and some small adjustments to saddle height and I was soon in the mwah zone (think John Giblin or Percy Jones).
Mine's heavy. Yours might not be -- like most kinds of wood, agathis varies considerably.
My only complaint -- and it's not really much of a complaint, given the low price and how good this thing is overall -- is that the tuners are poor (hence the one star deduction). They'll hold pitch fine, but there is a ton of lag when reversing direction and the gears feel like they're grinding a bit. I'll be replacing those, but could live with them if I had to.
The Squier version is very good. Plays great and looks good too! Maybe if you went for the $2000. Dollar USA made model it would matter, but there is no $300 difference to my eye.
There were a few marks on the pickgaurd but that is insignificant to me as it does not have an effect on the sound or playability.
If you are on the fence about buying this bass guitar, just pull the trigger and go for it. It plays beautifully and sounds great.
When I pulled it out of the box, the ONLY thing I needed to do is to tune it up one half step. 2 thumbs WAY up!
