Good instruments but NOT worth the extra money...

Alrighty, after having just spent the weekend playing one of these, I felt compelled to write a review here. Before I get into this, let me say that I do in fact consider myself to be a semi-professional musician. I've been playing for over 30 years now, both on stage and in the studio, with nearly 20 of those years being exclusively on Strats for my electrics. I am currently working as lead guitar (and guitar synth) player in a Southern Rock band and I currently have about a dozen Strats in my arsenal, ranging from some very nice Standards (Made in Mexico) to some very humble Squiers. Likewise I've done my own setups and repair for many years now and I've even built a couple of Partscaster in my day. I've even published an article on a certain manufacture's website on "How to Spot a Fake Strat". In other words, I do know a little something about guitars and particularly Stratocasters.

Now before someone starts sending me hate mail here, let me also clearly say that these ARE good instruments. My review here isn't specifically aimed at the quality of these instruments, at least not specifically on it's own. Likewise, if you're like me and you've been playing for more than a few years, chances are you already know what a Strat is and whether or not this instrument is right for you. This review is aimed at those new to guitar playing...or at least new to the world of Strats. Considering the amount of mis-information that's floating around on the internet, I would like to dispel a few myths about these particular guitars.and provide a few facts for people to consider before making a purchase.

So what then is my main gripe about these instruments and the reason for only 3 stars in my rating? Price.

This 2013 American Made Standard Fender Stratocaster is absolutely one of the most gorgeous sounding and playing instruments I have ever played. I also have a 2009 American Standard in 3 tone sunburst...and I have to say the exact same thing about that.

I had stayed away from Fender for a while...until I walked into a guitar store recently and picked up the 2009 and took it for a spin. Whatever Fender has done since 2008 (tried a bunch)...it's flat out working.

My grandfather had a 1957 Strat that he bought new. I had the good fortune to play it once...and I have to say...even with the modern appointments...these guitars...since 2008.. feel a LOT like that one.

This 2013 has a maple neck with a satin back that plays like butter. The rolled edges make it feel like it's been played for years. The fret dressing is very well done...every fret is seated correctly.

This thing stays in tune. It practically begs you to beat the snot out of it. The more you dig in with this guitar...the more it responds. It also sings when articulating subtle lines.

The pick-ups are Custom shop Fat 50's. The fat 50's have a very nice rounded sound to them. They are also very quiet for a single coil. They accentuate the high-mids throughout the tonal range...which is really what makes a Strat a Strat. That means your solo's are going to sound amazing. The fat 50's make each of the 5 tonal selectors sound like quintessential versions of those positions on a Stratocaster. Personally...I'd roll off the highs on each of the tone nobs to around "7" to get that smooth tonality...the upper highs will be there if you need them.

If you have never had an American Made Fender Stratocaster....and you're thinking about it...do yourself a favor and get it.

This is an AMAZING guitar! If you can only have one guitar in your entire life...this one is the one to have. It's extremely versatile and an all around great instrument. I also own an Ibanez SAS32 and a PRS CE22. I still prefer my PRS a tiny bit more but as for as value and overall quality goes...my new Strat holds it's own to say the least. I love the great playability that the Maple neck creates; it's so smooth and fast. Aesthetically, this thing is absolutely beautiful - I love the Olympic White finish!

If you're on the fence about it, do yourself a favor and just get it. Don't skimp out and get a Mexican Strat. Not only is the American Strat an iconic musical instrument but if you treat it right it will provide you with a lifetime of amazing sound and can easily survive long enough for you to pass it down to your children. As far as high-end guitars so, this is a great value. PRSs and Gibsons go for 2-3x as much and in my opinion, are only slightly better guitars.

Having fully worn out the bridge and frets of my old workhorse, an Olympic White 1986 "Made in Japan" Stratocaster that I bought new in 1987, I have been looking for a replacement. Was not happy with the feel and quality of American Strats during the 1990s, but since 2009 the quality has been getting consistently better. I rolled the dice on this one, because despite my many other guitars, I really miss the beautiful, mellow tones of a genuine single coil Strat. It was everything I expected, a beautiful sounding instrument of superb quality. A minor gripe: it was not set up well, and worse had light gauge strings, so I had to do a full set up for the heavier gauges I play, including truss rod and intonation, but once I did I was amazed at the smooth feel of the neck, how low you could set the action with no buzzes, and how well it stays in tune, even if you go aggro with the trem. The custom shop Fat50 pickups offer both beautiful tones, and many tonal possibilities and are exceptionally quiet for the gain delivered. Delighted to see Fender deliver this level of quality and craftsmanship.
