I also own and play through a Fender Super Champ X2 which is all tube. After receiving the Mustang I V2, I tried them both out side by side. I expected the Mustang to fall short of the amazing rich bodied sound that my (all tube) Super Champ puts out. I was very wrong. Although my tube amp was $380 and this solid state Mustang was only $120 the Mustang is a very close competitor. It's the same speaker size, and the sound is rich and clear. Solid state technology has come a long way in the last few decades. Even the distortion sounds clean and warm, none of the harsh "transistor breakup" that I remember back in the mid to late 90's. If my daughter ever decides to sell it, I'll buy it back from her!
My bottom line is this; with all the great features this amp packs, the quality of materials and build, and the amazing sound that Fender has achieved for a very low price, this is the amp to buy and own for years. Way to go Fender! You have done very well.
The downside? I can't imagine trying to remember the possible settings and effects through the knobs on the amp itself. The only way to really use this amp is with Fender Fuse on an attached (sadly, wired only) PC/laptop. Further, while the software allows for an incredible amount of customization, it is quirky and takes some getting used to to use to its fullest. Notably not user friendly is how to save and edit preset files (names, etc.) changing amp setting on presets is easy, but just try to change the name of a preset you've modified and "saved" to Fuse - good luck figuring that one out. Then, good luck finding presets on the web site unless you happen to click on the correct google search result. More likely you'll find band tracks with no obvious way to get to presets for the Mustang V2 (hint, search Mustang V2 presets and you'll get there, but you may not if you just go to the main Fuse web site). I am subtracting one star for the poor file editing approach and lack of obviousness in finding presets on the web site. These are, however, minor niggles and I would highly recommend this amp.
From YouTube videos, it appears the Peavey is much easier to customize effects on the amp and I wish I had the chance to test drive one for a few weeks before having bought the Fender. I can't say I would have changed my mind, but I can't help but wonder if I would have been even happier with the Peavey. I recommend testing both at a store and making your own decision, but I can say that if you don't mind working through your PC, the Fender is an amazing little amp for not much money.
Oh and I also bought the Fender foot switch. Very cheap and really helps if you need to change presets during a song (e.g. Welcome to the Jungle with and without delay). Highly recommended accessory.
