* this is an add on to my original review*
I just finished reading a few other reviews of this book and I have to say I disagree with the one and three star reviews. Fist of all I never got the feeling that she was putting down the Chinese mysticism and traditional beliefs. We live in very different times and our surroundings are very different as well. She makes that point clear and I agree with that rationale. Another review mentions something about the author saying that you shouldn't buy a bamboo flute and expect good fortune to follow. What she(the author) repeats in this book ( which is also IN THE TITLE ) is having a home that feels good. I believe what she was trying to say here is that you don't need to feel like you should fill your home with items that you don't like, need or want just because someone else said it will bring you luck or misfortune if you don't. I am sure that she would say if it makes your home feel good and you like it, then by all means buy it. And as far as the comment that she is asking the reader to simply accept core Compass School philosophies I disagree with that 100%! She states that there are many different "schools" or approaches and gives a brief description of each. She says and I quote " This book is not intended to debate the superiority or merits of one approach over another. While I do have my personal opinions and preferences for what works in feng shui, I honestly believe that each person needs to decide which approach works best for his/her specific space" She also says " Bear in mind that feng shui is a complicated subject with many different philosophies and techniques. Therefore you will have to discover what feels and works best for you. I suggest that you examine and integrate the ideas that resonate with you and proceed from there." I believe that this book shows you the entrance to the world of feng shui and is a good starting point for the person who is new to the whole concept. The last sentence of her book says "My wish is that you continue to explore feng shui in more depth, enjoying the journey as much as the destination." And as far as the review where someone stated that they thought the Feng Shui for Dummies was a better book, I find it amusing because I ordered both this book and that one at the same time. I started to read the Dummies book first and didn't like it at all. I picked up McCandless' and read it cover to cover in two nights. I am in the process of returning the other mainly because the suggestions of hanging bamboo flutes and faceted crystals with 9" red ribbons didn't feel good to me. I have a feeling they would not have looked good either.
Just received my book!! I am decorating my home and I have been waiting.
I love the Feng Shui teachings....
Regards, Vera
