About FenixLight Limited
FenixLight Limited came about when a group of young men, passionate about high quality illumination tools, grew increasingly dissatisfied with the number of mediocre flashlights on the market, which they felt often featured substandard construction and poor attention to detail. They set out to make world-class lighting tools, and began by organizing a group of professional engineers to head what would become FenixLight Limited's machining, electronics, and design departments.

Fenix's first model, 2005's L1 series, helped usher in a new era of high quality, single AA lights. The L1 integrated a bright beam, constant regulation circuit, and low operating costs in a very compact design. Since appearing on the market, FenixLight Limited has continued to expand its product line. From the initial L1 model -- voted one of the most innovative flashlights of 2005 by users and media -- to the latest multi-level, processor-controlled lights, Fenix continues to innovate the personal lighting industry.

This light is really a good buy considering what you get. I am ignoring the $5 "key chain lights" which have laughable brigthness and construction quality. The light has a compelling design with the TIR lens as opposed to a traditional reflector. This makes the light smaller overall. There are lights with a few more lumens that are orders-of-magnitude more expensive for minimal brightness gains. . most of which the naked-eye is unable to detect. The light is a "battery crusher" with no spring. I thought it was a little hard to operate one-handed but if you take out the bottom contacts with a pair of tweezers, give them a slight bend upwards, and lubricate the threads with super-lube it will be smooth and easy one-handed operation. I am biased towards multi-mode lights that start out on medium power (such as this light). In my opinion this is the most useful configuration since high-power drains more of the battery (and is crazy bright with this light), and low is too low for most situations. Medium I feel is the best all-around most useful mode. . and selecting low or high for the special-case situation is as easy as another twist!

At first glance it seems like it would be the perfect keychain light, but there are several glaring flaws that ultimately forced me to return it.

1. You have to unscrew the head more than half way off for the light to actually turn off. Any less and pressing the head can cause the light to turn on (this is caused by the lack of a sprung battery compartment). The light has come apart a few times in my pocket because of this.
2. As a consequence of (1), I *highly* doubt the waterproof claim holds when the light is in the off position (while on, there is indeed a tight seal). Seeing as the light will spend most of its time off (and vulnerable to foreign matter and water), I don't think I can trust the waterproof claim.
3. The battery compartment lacks a spring. This causes uneven contact between the battery and head which is noticeable when you try to turn on the light/change modes: the battery can bounce around just enough to make and break contact multiple times, thus cycling the mode. Very frustrating.

This was a very disappointing purchase coming from the PD32 (my first Fenix light, which is just 100% perfect). That will not discourage me from buying Fenix again - I'll just have to stay away from their twisty switches.

Suggestion for Fenix: Implement a twisty switch the way the Maglite Solitaire does it. When the switch is twisted close, the light is OFF. To turn ON the light, you untwist the head. (So, the opposite of what it is now)

I recently purchased the Fenix Compact 140 Lumen Flashlight, the 4Sevens Mini 123 R5 Edition and the Fenix PD20 CREE Q5 Mini LED Flashlight, Black, 180 Lumens, Uses 1 X CR123A Battery to replace my SureFire Executive E1 for EDC (every day carry).

All of these flashlights were brighter, lighter and smaller than my vintage E1. The one I setled on for EDC was the 4Sevens Mini 123 R5 Edition.

Since I won't be writing three entirely different reviews, let me tell you what I like and dislike in a EDC light:
* It has to be something I always have with me - thus the term EDC.
* It has to fit on a key chain (something that my SureFire E1 did begrudgingly)
* It has to be small, light and have at least low, medium and high settings
* It is preferable to have a dedicated on-off switch to a twist-on switch. This is because I don't want the light to turn on accidentally and not be ready when I need it.

Much less important to me are things like strobe, SOS, beacon, and so on because of two reasons: first they are invariably difficult to activate (strobe coming to mind as the most useless in a tactical situation) and second, the additional weight and cost isn't justified since it's unlikely I'll ever use them. Follow me on this: is this the primary use as a flashlight or a signalling device?

Good price. Quick shipment after ordering. Fast delivery. First impressions very good. Slightly disappointed it did not come with battery. Greased the threads to ensure smooth twisting of the control head. Works as described. Throw and spill better than expected; as good as lights much more expensive. Carries easily; small and light. Scraped threads off plastic bottle cap and use it as head and lens cover to avoid scratches. Light comes with extra O-ring and lens. Knurled surfaces on both body and head make it easy to turn on and off. So far, so good. Will buy another Fenix model soon.

I ordered this thinking that "upgraded"meant that the issues that other people were having (loose battery, light coming on on it's own, etc) had been fixed. I was wrong. I will say that it's a decent light for its size. Unfortunately I have to rate it two stars because the problem is substantial. The light is almost unusable out of the box. It is either on (and functioning appropriately), or it is off with a loose battery rattling around with the head about to fall off of the threads. The only reason I did not rate it one star is because the problem is fixable with a sheet of 2mm foam (see pictures). To fix the problem, I took the 2 mm foam and cut it into what resemble the washer. It can be placed either on top of or beneath the battery enabling the light to work appropriately. I would not recommend this light unless you intend to modify it in some way.
