The build quality is typical Fenix. Not as solid as a Surefire, but very well built for the price. The reverse clicky switch (Reverse clicky switches do not have any momentary on feature) works well and has a nice feel to it. The beam pattern is what I like to refer to as a utility light. It is not all throw, nor is it all flood. It is a nice combination of the two that provides for adequate through and a lot of side spill. I like this type of light for night hikes, walking the dogs at late hours, etc.. because it does provide ample throw to see what may lie farther ahead but also offers that nice wide side spill for good situational awareness. The LED's tint is acceptable, and I use that word because tint is a very subjective item.
The only issue I have with the light and I did deduct one star for is the battery run time. For reference purposes I consider this lights four modes to be low, medium, high, and turbo. Fenix's reported 3+ hours on turbo mode seemed excessive for the batteries being used and it is. If you read the asterisk comments that time includes time at reduced power levels due to thermal management power reduction. In my experience it also reflects that even some brand name batteries will not provide enough power for turbo / high mode once they lose about 20% of their capacity. Thus the light drops down to the high mode for much of that run time. I have not run a full run time test on turbo mode but I based upon the measurements from my ZTS battery tester I would guess that the run time on turbo then reduced to high by thermal management would be somewhere between two and three hours as the batteries were down to 40% capacity after about one hour of use. Now to be fair, batteries vary so your results may be better or worse than mine which were completed using fresh Duracell copper top batteries.
I have not yet tested the run time on high, which is projected to be 11 hours on alkaline batteries. I may try that over the next day or two. Since the TIR reflector design does such a great job gathering and projecting the light forward the use of turbo mode is really not necessary all that often. I would treat this light as a three mode light with limited turbo ability based upon the battery brand and type used used. Duracell for example has both the cooper top and then two higher tier AA batteries.
When the batteries cannot support the mode requested....If running the light will step down to the next highest level. When trying to select a mode that the batteries cannot supply that mode may be skipped. Either way, the light will not leave you in the dark as the batteries become depleted.
The TIR reflector system does a great job of projecting the light output making low mode very usable for low light navigation to preserve night vision and / or battery run time in an emergency situation. You will be surprised how useful this light is on low mode.
Bottom line.,...This IS a nice light for the money. It has a VERY usable beam pattern on all settings. Low and medium modes each provide enough light for use during extended power outages or emergency situations. High mode is bright enough for most occasions and turbo is available depending on available battery power. At the current price point this light IS a good value.
UPDATE 09/04/20 - Traded e-mail with Fenix Customer Support. The run time values published by Fenix were likely reversed. By that I mean that the run times listed for the alkaline batteries were actually those of the NIMH and vice versa. Thus the run time on alkaline batteries is much lower and you will lose access to the turbo mode well before you might expect. Now that said, the output and run times are consistent with other lights of this type. Also keep in mind that we very rarely run a light continuously. That is very hard on the batteries. The way we normally use them...Off and on for shorter periods of time....You will not notice the shorter run time as much. Plus high mode is more than adequate much of the time.
PS This review originally Posted on fenix store in hopes of increasing sales of this light so the reflector design gets used in more fenix lights. Absolutely love this reflector design!
I miss my e12 I lost it a while back and I was looking for a replacement. I hope there is an e12 v2 in the near future. Or maybe if they modify the tail switch slightly I would love one of these. It was the shortest length AA with the longest lasting battery I could find made by a reputable company. Also I really like the lumen settings fenix tends to go with. I will keep watch on fenix this next year. Looks like they are making some new lights.
