I fired this up for the first time tonight and wandered around my rural property with it. It is pretty impressive given its size and weight.

I'd say it is optimized more for "flood" rather than "throw." At full output (<900 lumens) I would estimate the maximum effective range to be about 100 yds. with quite a bit of illumination of the surrounding area. This is a reasonable design choice for a general-purpose light. Shining it up my street, which only has streetlights about every 200 yds., it illuminated both lanes pretty well out to about 100 yds. on full output. I would imagine that, even at the next level down (400 lm) it would still illuminate something in the road nearly that far out, though. The street was empty when I did this, and illuminating asphalt is hardly representative of a light's capabilities. Now Fenix claim much higher distances even at medium output, ("204m @ 110 lm"!!) but we don't know what their parameters are; I'm thinking of being able to identify an object, person or animal.

The settings seem well chosen. 10 lm is great for reading a map or your watch; 110 is about right for general use, while 400 should light up an average back yard pretty effectively. The strobe would be devastating at close range.

USB charging is an excellent feature and one appearing on more Fenix lights. The ability to use a couple of CR123 batteries in a pinch is an added bonus.

I have just a couple of minor quibbles. Perhaps it is just dryness due to older hands, but I could use a rubberized grip. Also, I find the small ON/OFF/LEVEL switch a little hard to find in the dark. (This is the same switch as on the PD32, where I don't have this problem, for some reason.) I don't know how this could be improved; perhaps a larger "pad" with more texture? Making it bright yellow would probably help in low light as well. But these are small details. Overall I'm impressed.

Just took delivery of this and while the light output is impressive, I was overly disappointed in the poor design choice of this flashlight and let me tell you why.

This light in all its glory is one awesome flashlight, but it has one achilles heel and that is the poor design choice surrounding its propriety battery. So this flashlight is being market as internally "rechargeable" but they do not point out clearly that it's only internally rechargeable if you use their proprietary 18650 battery that comes with the flashlight. Now here is the real kicker, they DISCONTINUE their proprietary battery for this flashlight after only a few months. So now the one feature that sets it apart from other flashlight, the internal usb charging ability, is dieing every single time you recharge that battery because it can only hold so many cycle of charge then it kicks the bucket.

You can indeed use regular 18650 or CR123 but even the regular 18650 can't be internally recharge. So now the usb charging ability is down the drain and a complete trash of a function without their 1 included "proprietary" battery that comes with it.

Absolutely one of the finest flashlights available. I used mine for a couple months this summer in attics, basements, and everywhere else. In normal daylight this little flashlight will illuminate a wall. With average indoor lighting, this makes what seems to be visible areas turn into extremely brightly lit areas. This flashlight won't just turn night time into daytime, it will turn daytime into bright sunshine time. I can come up on someone using a flashlight and then illuminate them and the area they were searching in. I receive constant comments on the power of the flashlight everywhere I go. Is it 960 lumens? Well I have a 3 month old flashlight that was listed as 960 lumens or so with four Panasonic 18650s and this Fenix with stock battery is brighter. Oddly, the runtime on brightest setting is about the same between the two flashlights. Also, I can run the flashlight all day, usually on highest power setting and it lasts all day. I don't mean leaving it on for the whole time, bu on/off/setting up/down, etc. I think the runtime on highest setting is a couple hours, but in real world use the longevity is incredible.

Despite the incorrect description, I ordered this item June 2014 and did receive the correct Fenix UC40UE light.
The light is excellent for what I wanted - Rechargeable, great size for a duty belt, extremely bright, nice beam pattern, and quality I have come to know Fenix for having. The only drawback to the light after my first night of carrying it is that the button IS hard to locate quickly, being on the side and not raised much, unlike my Fenix TK-41's buttons. The button must be depressed for approx 0.5sec before the light comes on and held for 0.5sec for the light to turn off. Holding the button while on or off, strobe mode is entered until the button is again released. UI was non-intuitive until I read the manual, but now it's a synch to operate.

I like it, but I don't love it.

I'm so use to my old PD 35 and LD20 that I immediately attempt to turn on the flashlight by pressing the back.

This is not a flashlight that you buy for fast deployment. The button is really hard to find once you un-holster it. Also, there is no clip included or a way to add one.

This flashlight should be bought for general use in a working environment, or field service work, but I would not recommend this for law-enforcement.

Would be great for a search a rescue light/camping.

The plus of this light is that it can be charged by USB. This makes it easy to keep it properly charged just by connecting it to a phone charger or a battery bank.

The battery is uses is indeed an 18650, but there is no way you can use ANY 18650 without a proprietary plastic housing. It's not a big deal, but it's something to mention if you intend to use a back up battery.

This flashlight is indeed extremely bright.

I currently carry this flashlight as my primary and keep an LD20 as a backup flashlight in the truck in the event this one fails.
