This one starts with Eric Branson back aboard the Dreamtime with the people traveling with him.
Eric Branson is an ex Navy SEAL. A guy who lived for combat. Once he left the SEAL's he became a mercenary. His lifestyle cost him his marriage.
Shauna his ex and her current husband and his son are traveling with Eric along with Jonathan a kid Eric had befriended in Florida. A Jonathan who turned out to be one very capable guy. Eric finally made it to Louisiana and his brother Keith. Eric hadn't laid eyes on his brother yet but his dad Bart and Jonathan and the others had. Eric knows he will see Keith soon.
Right now Bart wants to know what took him so long to get back. Eric tells him that he made it to Keith's house. No Keith. Bart told him that Vic, Keith's brother in law, got the Dreamtime off the shoal and back into the channel. Bart wanted to know what took Eric so long to get back.
Eric then told him about the group he met at Keith's house. A Professor Russell and eight or nine of his students. The professor fooled Eric big time. He told Eric one of their number, a young girl, had fallen and had broken bones. He wanted Eric to go back with him to get her. They thought Eric was the Sheriff. A fact that Eric let them think. He decided to go back with them. Russell was in the front passenger side of the vehicle and two of his students were in the bed of the truck. Once on the site one of the kids in the back hit Eric in the head with a two by four. The Professor then had him loaded in the back of Keith's truck and the tossed him into the river thinking the gators would get him. They also took Eric's M-4, his Glock 19 and his prized Bowie knife.
They themselves had traveled by bicycle. Good quality bikes that some had trailers attached to. They traveled at night and rested during the day. They were headed to Austin, Texas. The longer the professor had talked the more Eric realized these guys were anti Government and saw cops as the enemy. That didn't deter Eric from going to find the girl.
Eric, being a SEAL had clenched his arms and fists when they tied his hands behind his back. He was able to slip out of the restraints and head for the surface. Of course he swam underwater for time so they wouldn't see his head when he emerged. He then headed back for Keith's. Keith had loads of guns, ammo and supplies at his house and Eric knew the Professor and his crew would be headed there. Of course they were and there was no injured girl.
Once he got back to Keith's house he made it under the stairway. The house was built on stilts so the stairway went up to first floor which is very high off the ground. Eric froze as he heard the front door slam. He watched a pair of feet and ankles descend the stairway. There were only four bikes left in the yard so Eric figured the others went on ahead. Those here were busy stripping Keith's house of anything useful and putting it in the back of Keith's truck. That's when Eric decided these four would not be surviving. The guy loading the truck right now is one of the two who were in the back when Eric was hit in the head. Eric figured this was what this group had been doing all along. Its how they got the supplies to keep heading for Texas.
Eric waited for the guy to make it half way up the stairs then he headed up behind him. Eric then broke the mans neck and dragged him down the stairs. The guy was carrying Eric's Glock 19. Eric was now armed.
Professor Russell started yelling for the guy, calling him Steve. Russell came down the stairs and that when Eric appeared. Russell reached for the AK he was carrying and Eric shot him in the chest and the face. He then headed up the stairs and shot the other kid. A woman started screaming. Eric then found his prized Bowie knife on the guy. He put it back on his belt where it belonged. He then told the woman to come out with her hands on her head which she did. He should have shot her right then but didn't. Its a mistake that he will regret.
That's the story of his missing time. Bart is glad Eric made it out alive. Now they had to figure out how far they could go on the waterway on the way to Boulder, Colorado so Eric can get Megan, his daughter.
Of course Shauna is bound and determined to go despite her wounded hand. Her husband isn't keen on Shauna traveling anywhere with her ex husband. Eric knows that ship had sailed long ago but he also knew Shauna would be going along with Jonathan.
Eric finally meets with his brother Keith. A Keith who is devastated to learn that the rest of Russell's idiot companions had burned his house down. Eric is regretting leaving the woman alive. He should have shot her like the others. Nothing to be done now though.
Keith knows of a boat they might be able to rent from the owner. Vic uses another boat to head that way only to be shot to death when they get there. Eric has Keith drop him off and he works his way around and kills the two men who are at the house. He and Keith find the owner and his wife dead inside the house. Now they have a boat. Now will begin another long journey.
So begins another great read by Williams.
This one has Eric, Shauna, Jonathan, Keith, a lock where the Army disarms Eric, a Sgt. who tells him the oil barges are allowed through the locks, the barges are pushed in by powerful boats, six barges and one push boat, the Sgt. tells Eric perhaps one of the captains will take them on as passengers for a price, Eric has gold and when the next barges come through he makes a deal with the Captain, a Captain who likes the gold,. the barge as six deck hands and three men the company put aboard for security, Eric watches the security men, all three of them, and knows right away these men aren't professionals, he also doesn't trust that they can protect the barges, He and Jonathan take turns watching the men, the journey will end in St. Louis on the Missouri River, its a journey that won't end quite the way anyone thinks it will and Eric will need all of his skills to make sure he, Shauna and Jonathan survive.
Eric Branson, ex-US Navy SEAL is desperately trying to find his missing daughter Megan, last known to be at college in Colorado.. But he's down on the Gulf Coast, over a thousand miles away! And to make matters worse, the US is in disarray, factionally-divided, with the US Gov struggling to maintain order in a possible 2nd Civil-War. With no internet, cell-phones or infrastructure to rely on, Eric and his ex-wife and friends set out with few supplies but a hell of a lot of courage and hope, to find Megan with danger and opposition every step of the way! In-depth characterization, believable events and dialogue and fantastic strategy and fight-scene drama make this a winner as is usual with Scott's books. He's a true wordsmith. This series and his others are not to be missed!
