David Ogden Stiers is the perfect narrator to charm your kids into listening to music. They may already know him as the voice of Disney characters, and you may know him from his appearances on M.A.S.H. and Murder, She Wrote. What you may NOT know is that he is a fabulous musician, conducts orchestras all over the world, and has a killer sense of humor. This belongs in any household with kids or grandkids. Great gift!
I highly recommend this cd to anyone -- young or just young at heart. My children (3 and 7 yrs) and I were mesmerized by Ferdinand -- what a wonderful setting of a classic children's book ! It is so refreshing to have a kid's cd with no computer-generated instruments -- just the beautiful acoustic sounds of the cello, piano and voice. We also love the new arrangements of the Carnival of the Animals and Mother Goose Suite -- it made us really sit up and pay attention in order to hear the subtle differences between the originals and these charming arrangements. Many thanks to composer Mark Fish and all of his performers for this addition to our listening library !
Happened to hear this on a classical station one random Tuesday afternoon. My sons (2 and 4 years old) were enthralled. I had never read the book before but now this is a favorite to listen to in the car. I also love that this disc includes Carnival of the Animals. I bought directly from the producer and got a pleasant surprise - an autographed CD jacket! Thanks David Ogden Stiers.
Can you remember the first time you heard Classical Music? Today most parents only buy pop-oreinted music for their children.
In 2010 only three `classics for children' are up for Grammy consideraton. Among them...the Munro Leaf classic, narrated by actor David Ogden Stiers "The Story of Ferdinand the Bull" with masterpieces by Ravel and Saint Saëns.
We hope that with this title we may prevail in winning over new young audiences that might help grow the fan base for all Classical Music artists for years to come.

Ferdinand and the Bull and Friends is a wonderful CD, the music is beautiful and the narration by David Ogden Stiers is really fun. I grew up listening to audio versions of great stories like The Wizard of Oz another wonderful pieces and was delighted to find this amazing compliation of music and stories. I think that music and the narration allow for greater utilization of kids' imagination which is so much better than television. After hearing this CD for the first time, I promptly bought 4 copies to share with my siblings children. Highly recommended.
Wonderful composition, musicianship, and narration make this CD a joy for music and story lovers young and old. Our four-year-old enjoys it as much as we do, and he asks to hear it again and again. He loves the packaging, too, because we can follow along with pictures and words. We definitely will be sending more to family and friends. I cannot think of a better gift.
This thing is just such concentrated fun, in so many different ways.
The superb quality of every aspect of it, and the unusually beautiful sound; the richness of the arranging so one forgets that there are only TWO instruments ... the variety of the three pieces, ending with the fantasy of Ravel's Mother Goose: the tales are so short but give one's imagination such beautiful pictures.
This CD has something for the child in everyone of all ages. The very youngest probably will not realize how rare this is till much later, when they look for more CDs this magical. But they won't find any very easily.
What a pleasure to have this recording! It's one of those special collaborations - music, lyrics, stories, arrangements, quality of playing, program notes, even inserts of the Ogden Nash poems! I curled up and listened to it all, like spending the evening getting into a great book. Fish's arrangements are glowing and gracious, and the players do a wonderful job bringing them to life, playing with wide-ranging orchestral color. These memorable pieces could open the way for new duo/chamber arrangements of orchestral repertoire.
Highly recommended. David Ogden Stiers' narration is stellar!! The original music composed by Mark Fish for "Ferdinand the Bull", as well as his arrangements of the Ravel and Saint-Saëns music, complement the storytelling perfectly. I had forgotten how wonderful the blending of great music with the spoken word can be. You won't go wrong sharing these three masterpieces, beautifully interpreted, with your children or grandchildren.
