4 stars for cute anthropomorphic bull-loney that's great for a family night popcorn flick.
It's not going to win any awards. It's no Pixar; the morals are just slap-you-across-the-face obvious, and the writing is average. It's clearly nonsensical; anyone who has been around a cow before knows there isn't exactly this level of intelligence going on in there.
But you're looking at Ferdinand because you have kids and want quality entertainment. Know that you'll get it. It's pretty. It's fun. It's silly. You might even shed a few tears. You'll certainly appreciate the lessons of anti-bullying, pacifism, and perseverance. You'll probably have to explain why you are watching it after you just BBQed up some awesome burgers, but that conversation comes eventually no matter what (if you are vegan et al, you can safely dodge that bullet).
Definitely recommended.
