Ferment alternates paragraphs between the present and the past, leading you to the discover the conflict at the same time as you discover the plot of the book. For the two thirds of the book, it seems you're reading a pair of loosely connected stories with no particular goal in mind. Then you hit the turning point in the plot that pulls the two halves together, and from there to the end, the book takes a turn to the surreal.
It's a fairly quick read, and you'll learn absolutely nothing about how an actual circus works or who clowns are, as the author takes delight in the idea that he has no business acting as an authority on either subject.
