Product Description

FERNAND GRAVET Very rare! Publicity photo for Warner Bros., wearing a natty scarf, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/good wishes/Gravet". B/w, 8x10. Studio photo captioned in lower margin. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: October 2, 1938. Belgian actor Fernand Gravey (1905-1970), billed Gravet in his American films, was appearing in European silent films in his teens, but made his first English language film (Bitter Sweet) in 1933. He had prominent roles in several Hollywood films of the late 1930s, including the starring role of Johann Strauss in The Great Waltz (1938), promoted with the odd publicity campaign "rhymes with gravy." In occupied France during World War II, he appeared in German-approved films while playing a heroic role in the Underground. A star in Europe, he made a few more English-language films in the 1960s, including How to Steal a Million and The Madwoman of Chaillot. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, Fine condition. - Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. DOCUMENT 289362
