Start with a little mystery, a little intrigue, some horoscope guidance from the stars, more than a little heated and forbidden attraction; then carefully mix in an over bearing brother, frantic father, a gorgeous former US Ranger, a ‘beautiful, quirky and fervent’ undercover agent and then add in some of Claudia’s readers’ favorite characters in the background suddenly there is MAGIC! You now have the best read of the year. Listen carefully and you can hear the reader’s own laughs and gasps as the sound becomes a play list for the book.
Harrison Everhart is retired military and a partner in HIB with Mason Bradley, Harrison is one of the Everhart brothers. One of the eldest brothers who decided to avenge his beloved parents who were killed together on 9/11, Harrison enlisted and went to Afghanistan until he realized that he needed a more clandestine role to effectively rid the world of monsters. The HIB team is his family now.
Luna Santillan beautiful, FBI trained profiler, an undercover agent on a secret assignment and her own secret, personal quest for justice. Not a wearer of corporate ‘dress for success’ clothing she stands out with metal chopsticks holding up her hair with numerous bracelets and anklets clinking against a fashion statement.
Of all Claudia’s books this is a not your basic love story, FERVENT quickly becomes a suspenseful thriller with the shadow of human trafficking and child snatching. The fast-moving story shortly becomes ‘holding your breath apprehensive.’ You will find yourself not being able to flip the pages fast enough. A wonderful stand-alone read and a must read to follow the Everheart brothers.
Harrison reaches for the moon and conquers. FBI agent Luna Santillan goes undercover in New York to bring down a human trafficker with an ulterior motive of finding her mother's killer. Luna also happens to be Tiago's step-sister who is on Mason's HIB team that Harrison is on. Harrison and Tiago are good friends but as is typical, Tiago does want Harrison hitting on his sister. The banter between Harrison and Luna is hilarious. Harrison's deadpan humor shocks Luna most of the time until she shakes it off and comes right back. The banter gets better when Tiago is around. Luna loves to rile her brother up by using Harrison - had me laughing out loud. The scene in the kitchen when Tiago almost catches them kissing is a standout. Not gonna tell - read the books, it's hilarious!
The timing of the books takes place around nine eleven when the Everhart boys are not looking forward to the anniversary of their parent's deaths. They all grieve differently but they are all still grieving and missing their parents desperately. Tiago informs Harrison he will be taking all the missions for now so that Harrison can stay behind and help her with her mission. The person Luna has targeted runs in the same circles that Harrison and Hazel's family can get her close to. Harrison convinces Luna that being his fake girlfriend would help her get close to the man responsible for the human trafficking ring. The chemistry between Harrison and Luna is off the charts. It is palpable, so well written, I could feel it as if I was in the room with them.
Harrison shares the story about his parents with Luna and she offers to go with him to the Cathedral to commemorate their lives. So needless to say, I balled my eyes out with Harrison as he finally broke down and grieved the death of his parents. In spite of the run in with his past, he finally realizes that Luna has stolen his heart by supporting him at what he considers to be his very worst. The love that his parents brought them up with is still with them and ultimately Harrison uses his mother's wisdom to conquer Luna's love. Their mother's goodnight phrase is a beautiful metaphor to Luna's name "And when I'm gone, you say good night to the moon, because that's where I'll always be watching over you."
We got to see the rest of the Everhart brothers, a wedding (not telling), Hazel and Willow throughout the book. Luna finally gets the opportunity to spread her wings and use her bad ass abilities that the FBI did not. In my humble opinion the ending was kind of flat, hence the 4 stars but overall the book was great! Can't wait for the next book in the series!
Mason - I have to mention Mason and his Nine. So beautiful how he considers James to be his.
I was honored with a copy of this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
it was amazing
After Flawed, this book is a complete 180! Where Flawed was a little heavy with the MCs having their issues, the MCs in Fervent are the complete opposite in dealing with them! Yes, there are still issues, but this was a very fun and enjoyable read! Luna is no whiny female MC, and Harrison is not your broody male MC. They literally are a perfect match!
Another Everheart who didn't think he would find love in his lifetime, has met his match! Luna is not your typical girl next door though. She's a kick ass woman who works with the FBI, but she's not really happy with her boss. Now going undercover, she also has a hidden agenda. To give her mother justice. Will she succeed even if her whole family is against her working on it?
One thing I'm missing though is Tiago. I wanted to see how he was able to accept the relationship. I kind of missed that best friend kicks best friend's ass haha!
