Editorial Reviews

3 CD set features the three LPs originally released by Festival in the '60s on CD for the first time. Each album comes as a remastered replica edition packaged in a nicely designed box with an eight page booklet with liner notes by Glenn a Baker.

Finally released in the true original artistic format, this collection stays true to the original albums. Previously they had been released in a variety of formats under different labels, and then large compositions. The first being, Birth of Brilliance 1963-1966 and then Brilliant From Birth, which was a better composite (both of these still considered collector's items). This compilation includes the original album covers of the first three albums, `The Bee Gees Sing & Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs', `Spicks and Specks' and `Turn Around, Look At Us', (which was actually released in early 1967 about the same time as Bee Gees 1st). The liner notes bare more information than from Brilliant From Birth, but the songs remain true to the original sequence, which are encased in a cardboard folder and each CD having its own cardboard sleeve.

Highlights of this collection are, 'Claustrophobia', 'Wine And Women' and 'I Was A Lover, A Leader Of Men' from 'The Bee Gees Sing & Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs'. From 'Spicks And Specks'; there is the title track single, 'Monday's Rain' (original version), 'How Many Birds' and 'Playdown' (a recent concert favorite from Barry). 'Turn Around, Look At Us' contains the famous Robin sung B-Side, 'I Am The World', 'Cherry Red' and 'The Battle of the Blue and the Grey'.

The remastering is noticeably better on all thirty-eight (38) songs than on any previous release, which is only befitting (particularly in Mono).

First about me- I'm a Bee Gees fan with all their cds including the 2 disc Brilliant From Birth which has all their Australian songs in 1 place on 2 cds. Since I had BFB, I was sitting on the fence about getting songs I already have. For those on the fence also, here is why you should get it. As we fans all know there has been endless cds with some songs being released in all combinations. However, here are my reasons to get it (count down style). #3- The 3 Australian albums are finally on cd with the right songs, in the right order and with the original covers. #2-It is remastered from the original tapes and sounds the best I've ever heard. And the #1 reason to buy this-After listening to the 2 cds(I haven't listen to the 3rd yet), I notice on the 2nd cd that Mondays Rain and Play Down were different from the versions that is on the Brilliant From Birth cd. If I find any different versions of songs on the 3rd cd, I'll up date this if I can figure out how.

Update- I have listened to the 3rd cd and haven't found another different versions of songs.

I enjoy these albums. A lot of these songs sound like teen idol jukebox material, while others have quality of their '60s hits, not really that much inferior. But different from their disco hits. I think Bees Gees early music deserve a listen, and earns to be a keeper for serious fans. I am satisfied with purchase. Songs are very short, much like early Beatles songs, and listening to all three albums isn't a chore. Quick listen, but very enjoyable.

I had the 4 Polydor albums released in 1978 with these songs, and have both of the earlier CD compilations with the Australian Bee Gee songs. None of these can compare to the sound quality on this CD set. Their beautiful harmonies are no longer lost in the muffled sound of the 1960's. I do have one complaint with my CD set. The album information in Windows Media Player for Turn Around...Look at Us comes up as the Spicks and Specks album. The sleeve, label, and songs are correct on the CD, I just had to manually input the album and track titles before ripping for my iPod.

...and always have been.

It was obvious even in their teens that these cats would make their mark. The singing and songwriting, although embryonic in places, is wonderful, exciting, original, joyful, spirited and... fun!

Not that there's a lack of moody Gees melancholy as well.

FANtastic!

The first two Australia albums by the Bee Gees plus an album of songs from their first album plus songs that were released as a single. This album includes "Cherry Red" a great ballad that was the B side of I "Want Home".
