An all-in-one summary of Budge on Egyptian religion

Budge's last book on Egyptian religion came out in 1934, the year he died. It's no more sophisticated than his works from 30 years earlier, and it's sort of an all-in-one summary of his views of Egyptian religion. Part 1 is mostly a retread of the subjects he discussed in books like Egyptian Religion and Egyptian Magic : Egyptian gods and theology, magic, and afterlife beliefs. The major subject that's new is the treatment of how Egyptian deities originated in Predynastic times—the section that gives this book its name. Budge assumes that Predynastic religion started out worshipping fetishes, then animals, then gods in human form. This simplistic linear evolution isn't borne out by the evidence. For instance, some of the oldest identifiable images of Egyptian gods show Min in human form—and many of those images were known even in Budge's time. Budge's late Victorian assumptions must have seemed dated to other scholars even in the 1930s, when the anthropology of religion, though still deeply flawed, was making important progress.

Part 2 is a collection of translations of Egyptian hymns and stories that are related to religion, sometimes rather tenuously. Budge has a reputation as a poor translator, and most of these texts, though unfortunately not all, can be found in up-to-date collections like Miriam Lichtheim's series on ancient Egyptian literature (mainly Volume 2 ), The Literature of Ancient Egypt , or John Foster's Hymns, Prayers, and Songs . There is no recent book that both analyzes Egyptian religion and translates a collection of relevant source texts like this, but considering the low quality of Budge's analyses and his translations, it's better to just buy separate, up-to-date books for each purpose.

A fine book, but not for beginners

This is a useful and informative book on the evolution of religion in ancient Egypt (and the evolution of Egypt itself), but don't make the mistake (as I did) of reading it as an introduction to Egyptian mythology. It is virtually impossible to understand everything Budge says if you do not already have a fair understanding of the basics of Egyptian mythology. However, if you have already studied a bit of mythology, you should find this book very helpful in understanding how tribal fetishes became revered national gods (and, in the process, how Egypt became one of the superpowers of the ancient world).
