Fever-Tree Story
Following a series of disappointing tonic water tastings, entrepreneurs Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow joined forces to analyze the composition of mixers. They quickly discovered that the majority of mixers were laden with preservatives, cheap aromatics and artificial sweeteners. A combination that adversely affected the tasting experience of cocktails. So, in 2004 they began creating mixers using all-natural and fresh ingredients.
Fever-Tree launched in the UK in early 2005. With no obstacle too large, the duo sourced the highest quality quinine from the Rwanda Congo border and blended it with spring water and botanical flavors, including rare ingredients such as marigold extracts and a bitter orange from Tanzania. Crucially, no artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or flavorings were added.
Since its launch in 2005, Fever-Tree has blossomed to a range complete with ten different varieties available in two size formats. Leading bartenders quickly caught on to the benefits of a premium mixer and today Fever-Tree is served in top hotels, leading restaurants and gastro pubs around the world.

QuinineQuinine is the key ingredient, and the essential bitterness, in tonic water. The brand name Fever-Tree was chosen as it is the colloquial name for the cinchona tree, the bark of which produces quinine. After much research, a specific type of fever tree plantation (known as cinchona Ledgeriana) located on the Rwanda/Congo border, was found to be producing the purest quinine in the world. For Charles and Tim, there was no other option but to source Fever-Tree's quinine from this plantation - the only drinks company to be doing so. GingerFresh Green Ginger from the Ivory Coast: The discovery of this ginger from the Ivory Coast was a real 'eureka' moment for Charles and Tim. Unlike any other ginger, it has an incredible lemongrass freshness to its aroma due to the oils being extracted as soon as the ginger is harvested. Nigerian Ginger from Nigeria: The ginger that we source from Nigeria has an aromatic intensity to it that adds depth to the ginger flavour. It perfectly complements the fresh zesty notes of the Fresh Green Ginger and the rich, chocolately notes of the ginger that we source from Cochin in South West India. Cochin Ginger from South West India: Uniquely rich and earthy, almost chocolatey in its aroma, this ginger complements the flavour notes in the Nigerian ginger and Fresh Green ginger perfectly. |
ElderflowersTo capture the finest elderflower flavour, we source hand-picked flowers from a small Gloucestershire farm on the edge of the Cotswolds. Renowned for growing some of the highest quality elder bushes in the UK, the elderflowers are hand-collected on the farm between May and June when the region is in full bloom. The unique flavour extraction process begins within hours of picking, to ensure that none of the delicate floral flavour is lost. |
Lemon Thyme and RosemaryWe were determined to keep pushing the boundaries for the benefit of our consumers. Our Mediterranean Tonic includes many essential oils of citruses and herbs gathered from around the shores of the Mediterranean. Natural SugarUnlike most mixers and soft drinks on the market today which contain saccharine or aspartame, our products are sweetened with only natural sugars. In our regular products we use cane sugar and in our Naturally Light products we use fruit sugar. These natural sweeteners create a fuller mouth-feel with none of the cloying aftertastes associated with cheaper, artificial alternatives. |
Soft Spring WaterWe use the very best quality natural spring water from a source in rural Staffordshire. With a low mineral content, this water is very soft, thus ensuring that our drinks are subtle in their taste and clean in their finish. High carbonation is a vital component of any mixed drink which is why we carbonate our products to an exceptionally high level. By using small, perfect bubbles we have been able to create an even smoother finish to our drinks. The smaller bubbles, combined with the viscosity created by using natural sugars, means that all of our drinks stay carbonated for longer - crucial when you are mixing them with spirits. |
'Sfumatrice' Lemon ExtractsSome of the world's finest lemons grow on the fertile slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, extracts of which are used in some of our tonic waters and also in our Sicilian Lemonade. To extract the high quality oils from the skin of the lemons, Sfumatrice equipment is used to gently hand press the lemons - normally a process reserved for the perfume industry. Again, we are the only drinks company to be using such a high quality extract. |
Bitter OrangeBitter orange is another key ingredient in any tonic water and can be sourced from all over the world. However, we worked with a specialist ingredient hunter who told us about a rare and unique extract that he had discovered while in Tanzania. These were once the best Ginger Beers in the world. Nothing else even came close. I had been buying these by the case for years from Amazon (sometimes as many as 1-3 cases per month)! They were not only the most mouth watering concoction I had ever tasted in my life (and I know my Ginger Beers), but they helped me so much in quelling the nausea I am dealing with from doing chemo, as there was so much fresh Ginger in them (almost medicinal for me). A tonic that I could never let myself run out of. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I never did run out, and all was well for a very long time.
Everything changed in October 2013 when I received three cases of this once wonderful Ginger Beer. They looked funny, tasted odd, and even bitter, and all shared an expiration date of 7/14. I know this product rather well and knew that something was really wrong here. Whatever spilled into the batches that expire 7/14, all had something in them that simply did not belong. There was no mistaking that something was wrong here. We even had neighbors taste test with us, and they agreed that something was definitely very odd in the ones that we had just received, which all expired 7/14.
One of these neighbors owns a home nearby, and as a bartender, knows the Fever Tree mixers well. He said that it was obvious that the factory thought it was still making Tonic Water and let Quinine or whatever makes up tonic, run into these instead of natural spring water, as always used. That would explain the strange and unrecognizable bitterness. All I knew is that I was now stuck with three cases of stuff that tasted awful.
I contacted Fever Tree directly to make them aware of this problem, as well as Brands Of Britain, who is the sole, authorized, distributor here in the United States.Read more ›

Really liked this ginger beer when I discovered it a few years ago. While the ingredients on the label remain the same, the recipie has been changed. The suspended particulates of ginger are gone as is the strong ginger flavor. Tastes better than common ginger ale, but not as good as it was up until last year. No longer worth the premium price. This will be the last Fever Tree ginger beer case I buy. Will keep buying tonic though. Side by side pic posted in product pictures section.
